The Department of Anthropology and the Institute for Social Science Research (ISSR) of The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa invite applications for a full-time, Associate or Full Professor position in medical and/or psychological anthropology beginning Fall 2021.

• Topical and geographic specializations are open, though the applicant should complement existing specialties in Anthropology and ISSR and be well-versed in quantitative and qualitative research methods.

• The successful applicant will have research skills and interests that contribute directly to Anthropology’s undergraduate and graduate programs and ISSR’s role in grant writing and social science research design and implementation across the University. Applicants should emphasize how they would complement the biocultural medical PhD program in Anthropology.

• A PhD in anthropology is required.

• The proposed faculty member will have teaching responsibilities that may include our undergraduate introductory courses in cultural or biological anthropology; other specific core undergraduate and graduate level classes in medical, biocultural, or psychological anthropology; and courses of their own development.

The Department of Anthropology takes a four-field approach to the BA, MA, and PhD degrees, emphasizing two areas of specialization that crosscut sub-disciplines: biocultural medical anthropology (broadly construed to encompass physical, sociocultural, and/or psychological wellbeing and functioning) and the archaeology of complex societies in the Americas. The successful candidate will be able to assist graduate students by chairing and serving on committees, providing instruction that prepares them to work across disciplinary boundaries, and helping them prepare to do original research. Applicants should also have ongoing projects and plans for future research that complement or build on Department strengths. The Institute for Social Science Research is an interdisciplinary research department within the College of Arts and Sciences. Its mission to promote and conduct social and behavioral research at The University of Alabama is carried out through collaborative interdisciplinary research and undergraduate and graduate research training. The successful candidate will join other ISSR researchers in conducting funded research, building collaborative relationships with researchers throughout the University, developing grant and contract proposals, and supervising undergraduate and graduate students in research. The individual will hold a joint appointment in ISSR and Anthropology, participating fully in both departments. A history of substantial external research funding and publications is required.
