Teacher for Mobile Programs (Temporary, Part- Time)

Education & Public Programs

Reporting to the Education Manager for Mobile Programs the Teacher for Mobile Programs facilitates object-based, interactive lessons for sixth and seventh grade students across Los Angeles County using objects from LACMA's collection. Work flexible and variable hours, typically 5-20 hours a week during the academic year. Some training time during the summer months. Reliable transportation and willingness to work in-person at elementary and middle schools throughout the Los Angeles County region is required. Work sites vary, for example from Santa Clarita to San Pedro, to Baldwin Park (paid mileage). Schedules are based on school bell schedules, start times are often 7:30am.

Responsibilities:
  • Research and develop curricula pertaining to the arts and cultures of the Early World (including Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, Rome, India, and China) and the Ancestral Americas.
  • Facilitate student discussion and object analysis centered on objects from LACMA's collections.
  • Facilitate art workshops including but not limited to drawing, painting, and sculpture.
  • Teach in a collaborative environment, both in-person within a classroom or gallery environment and virtually through Zoom and Google Meets.
  • Collaborate with Mobile Program teachers to create supplemental educational materials (including documents, interactive guides, presentations, and more) related to the Mobile Program's curricula.
  • Other duties as assigned within LACMA's Education and Public Programs department.

Benefits
  • The expected hourly rate for this Los Angeles, CA based position is $31.00, subject to change.

Qualifications:
  • An Associates degree or Bachelor's degree in Art History, Art Education, Cultural Anthropology or a related field and at least one year of teaching experience preferred.
  • A combination of related education, training, and teaching experience will be accepted.
  • Fluency in a second language, such as Spanish, is preferred but not required.
  • Ability to conduct independent research in areas relevant to LACMA's collection, including but not limited to Early World Cultures and the Ancestral Americas.
  • Familiarity with sixth and seventh grade curriculum and object-based teaching.
  • Ability to conduct research, create material, and facilitate discussions in a collaborative team environment.
  • Experience with digital platforms such as Zoom, Google Meets, Google Docs, and Google Slides.
  • Interest and commitment to student-centered pedagogy.
  • Have reliable transportation and a willingness to work at schools throughout the Los Angeles County region.
  • Willingness to work a seasonal and varied schedule M-F and occasional weekends (2-3x per year)
  • Work sites vary, for example from Santa Clarita to San Pedro, to Baldwin Park (paid mileage).
  • Start times are early morning (ex: 7:30am), based on school bell schedules during the academic year. Program takes all academic breaks such as summer and winter
