The Department of Anthropology at Brandeis University seeks an instructor for Anthropology 5a: Human Origins, a 4-credit course, for the Spring 2025 semester.

This is a gateway, introductory-level course in the undergraduate anthropology major. It examines the major biological and cultural transformations that took place over the course of several million years, as modern Homo sapiens evolved from ancestral primate species, and developed the cultural foundations that gave rise to modern societies. The class also provides students with a general background in evolutionary genetics and evolutionary theory as they pertain to the development of modern humans, extinct hominins, and our primate relatives.

The class will meet on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 12:20-1:10 pm. If the class has more than 30 enrolled students, the instructor will have the support of one or more teaching assistants.

Candidates who have teaching experience and hold a doctorate in Anthropology or are currently ABD in their doctoral studies will be given preference. Interested individuals should submit a cover letter, CV, and names and contact information for two references. Applicants may also wish to submit a draft syllabus. The deadline for first consideration is October 31, 2024.

This appointment is to a position that is in a collective bargaining unit represented by SEIU Local 509.
