If this sounds like you, M-NCPPC Montgomery Parks is seeking applicants for part-time employment with the Archaeology Program within the Cultural Resources Stewardship Section. Main job responsibilities include serving as archaeological reviewer for park development projects, assisting with archaeological research, conducting field investigations, lab processing and preparing summary reports. Very occasional night and weekend hours may be necessary. Between 30-32 hours a week. Pay rate is $23-25/hour, depending on experience.

Examples of Important Duties

Example duties and responsibilities for the position include:
  • Performing reviews of proposed development and park improvement projects for impacts to cultural resources on Park land
  • Conducting field investigations and limited testing, as needed
  • Coordinating with other Parks staff on projects
  • Artifact processing and cataloging, accurate completion of related field and lab paperwork
  • Preparing site forms, summaries, reports as appropriate.
  • Assisting with long term artifact collections management
  • Working with archaeology volunteers in lab, field, and during public events
  • Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Meet Secretary of the Interior Standards for Archaeology.
  • Proficiency with research, artifact analysis, and writing.
  • Experience with GIS, databases, or similar programs.
  • Demonstrated commitment to customer service, inclusion, diversity, equity, and access.
  • Bi-lingual skills (English/Spanish especially) are a plus.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Undergraduate degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or a related field is required plus 3-5 years' experience in archaeology with 2 of those years as paid professional experience or 8 years of professional experience and specialized education and training in Archaeology or Anthropology.
  • Applicants need to have solid experience in archaeological research and field methods, archaeological record keeping, lab procedures, and artifact identification for Mid-Atlantic material culture.
  • Applicants must have excellent organizational skills and be able to work independently.
  • Proven ability to excel in verbal communication, take direction, be a team player, flexibility to multitask and maintain stability under pressure.
  • The successful candidate will have experience with development review, site assessments and evaluating projects for impacts to cultural resources.
  • Applicants must be willing and able to work with a wide range of staff and public, engage with topics of cultural heritage.
  • The position will work out of Needwood Mansion in Derwood, MD.


Supplemental Information

Working Conditions
  • Ability to regularly work onsite/in person with staff, volunteers, and the public.
  • Candidates must be able to work outdoors in a range of conditions and lift up to 40lbs, including doing shovel testing and excavation.
  • Applicants must have proficiency with standard computer programs such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and have a valid driver's license.
  • Ability to provide regular transportation to work. No public transportation to the work site.
Supplemental Information
  • This position is a seasonal/intermittent (part-time) and does not provide benefits.
  • Salary based on experience.
  • A criminal background investigation will be completed prior to hire.
