[Sophia University – Position in Anthropology of Japan]
The Faculty of Liberal Arts, Sophia University, invites applications for a position in sociocultural anthropology of Japan. Hiring is at the rank of Assistant Professor, which is a five-year tenure-track appointment, or Associate Professor, which is tenured.
The candidate is expected to have a Ph.D. in anthropology in hand by June 15, 2025. Applicant must demonstrate excellence in research and teaching in sociocultural anthropology, with extensive fieldwork experience in Japan. A high level of Japanese language proficiency is required. The appointment begins in April or September 2026. Our faculty is committed to promoting gender balance. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, female candidates will be given priority if all other qualifications are equal. Salary and benefits are based on Sophia School Corporation’s rules and regulations.
The successful applicant is expected to maintain an active research agenda in their discipline and contribute to a community of globally-minded scholars and educators. Faculty research is supported by the Sophia Research Organization and Sophia Research Institutes. The ideal candidate will also show potential for acquiring external research funding.
All members of the faculty are expected to contribute to teaching. The teaching load is four courses the first year (over 2 semesters), and five courses the next year, on a two-year rotation. A course meets twice a week for one hundred minutes each class. The successful applicant is expected to teach an introductory course in the anthropology of Japan, a course in research methods, intermediate and advanced courses in the areas of their specialization, and a graduate-level course in the Japanese Studies area of the Graduate Program in Global Studies. The language of instruction is English.

The Faculty of Liberal Arts offers a comprehensive program in the humanities, international business and economics, and social studies. In addition to our degree students, we annually welcome exchange students from leading universities overseas. We also staff the Graduate Program in Global Studies, which offers M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Global Studies and Japanese Studies, and an M.A. degree in International Business and Development Studies.
The successful candidate must fulfill educational, research, and administrative duties in the operation of the department and faculty and participate in undergraduate and graduate admissions duties. They must also carry out administrative duties required by Sophia University.
