Who You Are:

Versar, Inc. is soliciting a Principal Investigator/Project Archaeologist to support our southeastern New Mexico cultural resources operations. Specifically, this requisition seeks a full-time staff position to coordinate and supervise a large data recovery in Lea County, New Mexico.

This position is a funded solicitation, salaried with health benefits, and 401k retirement. Hiring is for the full term of the contract. Continued employment with Versar beyond this data recovery is contingent on available contracts and performance.

What You'll Do:

Responsibilities include:
  • Management and direction of an archaeological field crew
  • Ability to coordinate with senior staff on a daily, weekly basis
  • Oversee artifact analysis
  • Carry out post-field technical writing.
  • Experience in supervising archaeological crews
  • Strong excavation skills, experience running a data recovery operation
  • At least four years of New Mexico experience
  • Strong writing and verbal skills to include the ability to prepare cultural resource reports
  • Demonstrated understanding of federal and state regulatory processes
  • Experience with GPS and Total Station data collection


What You'll Bring:
  • Graduate degree required in anthropology, history, or related field
  • Archaeological experience in southeastern New Mexico is required; permitted candidates on federal and state land mandatory.
  • Proven leadership abilities and excellent communication skills
  • Well-developed organizational skills as well previous data recovery experience are required for this position.
  • Proficient in GIS, Excel, Microsoft Word
  • Strong team player with the ability to collaborate effectively
  • Must possess valid driver's license
  • Willingness to commit to the life of the project
  • Permitted on New Mexico State Trust Lands and BLM SE District
  • Successful results of preemployment screenings, including federal background check, MVR, and drug screen
  • Comply with company drug and alcohol policy
  • Be authorized to work in the US or will be authorized by the successful candidate's start date


Location Requirements

The successful candidate will relocate to Carlsbad, New Mexico. Lodging provided for seven days of the week. Per-diem for days worked. Field efforts are expected to cover three-six months with post-field write up extending another six months. Remote work considered for post-field effort. Some travel to El Paso, Texas is required.
