Job Details

The Department of Anthropology at Binghamton University (SUNY) https://www.binghamton.edu/anthropology/ seeks qualified applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in biological anthropology. We seek a scholar with a dual specialization in molecular anthropology (particularly, forensic and ancient DNA techniques) and bioarcheology. We are particularly interested in candidates whose research expertise includes a mixture of cutting-edge molecular laboratory techniques (e.g. aDNA, stable isotopes, proteomics, ZooMS) and bioinformatic approaches. The successful applicant will demonstrate the ability to develop an externally funded research program and be prepared to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in biological anthropology in the following areas: molecular anthropology methods, forensic/ancient DNA, ancient biomolecules, paleogenomics, bioinformatics, and bioarcheology. Topical and geographic areas of specialization are open, with a preference for the study of ancient migrations in and around the Mediterranean. We prefer a candidate whose research includes both laboratory and field components. The successful candidate will be instrumental in designing and establishing a new genomic laboratory suite that includes space for both ancient and contemporary DNA analyses.

The selected candidate will actively contribute to the university's mission of advancing a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion through research, teaching, mentoring, and service, as well as through engagement with faculty, students, and staff.

Binghamton University is an equal opportunity / affirmative action employer.

Requirements:

  • Expertise in genetic/genomic anthropology, isotopic analysis, and bioarcheology
  • Experience teaching laboratory methods in genetic anthropology

  • Research interests in ancient migration patterns and gene flow
  • Research interests in the development of novel forensic or ancient DNA applications/techniques
  • Active field and laboratory research
  • Potential for transdisciplinary teaching and research collaborations in Biological Sciences, Pharmacy, or other cognate fields
  • Established track record of securing research funding
  • Expertise in innovative laboratory methods development, optimization, and validation
  • Established track record of integrating students into research (e.g., via co-authorship of publications, conference presentations, or other works)
