What You Will Be Doing
The individual will work in the Review/Compliance Unit and will report to the unit's lead to review development or improvement projects that are federally and/or state licensed, funded, permitted, or on federal and/or state land for potential impacts to properties eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. The position will draft written recommendations to the state/federal agencies on what action is necessary to avoid, minimize, or mitigate adverse effects to significant historic properties. The individual will represent the office in consultation meetings and provide technical assistance to the office, agency partners, consulting parties, and members of the public.

Mission and Culture
The mission of the Department of Natural Resources is to "develop, conserve and maximize the use of Alaska's natural resources consistent with the public interest." One of the Department of Natural Resources' focus areas is to "ensure sufficient data acquisition and assessment of land and resources to foster responsible and community development and public safety. The mission of the Division of Parks and Outdoor Recreation is to "provide outdoor recreation opportunities and conserve and interpret natural, cultural, and historic resources for the use, enjoyment, and welfare of the people." The Office of History and Archaeology's contribution to the Department's mission is to provide a historic preservation program to encourage the preservation and protection of the historic, prehistoric and archaeological resources of Alaska. This position in the Office of History and Archaeology is part of the core services of the Office to protect archaeological and historic sites.

The position involves active participation in the Office of History and Archaeology/State Historic Preservation Office programs to protect and preserve Alaska's heritage resources. The position offers both general opportunities to gain experience in historic preservation programs, as well as learning or improving their knowledge of the diverse archaeological and historic resources of the State of Alaska. This is a long-term, nonpermanent position. The incumbent will gain or improve their knowledge of state historic preservation programs, cultural resource management, and Alaska's heritage as part of the Office's State Historic Preservation Office staff.

The Working Environment You Can Expect
The position's duty station is Anchorage in the Atwood Building. Field visits to project locations include travel to cities, towns, communities, and remote locations throughout Alaska.

Who We Are Looking For
  • Familiarity with or experience in working with federal and/or state Cultural Resource Management laws, regulations, and guidelines, especially Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.
  • Famiarility with or experience working with the National Register of Historic Places program.
  • Experience in archaeological work, preferably in Alaska.
  • Proficiency in the use of computer applications, specifically word processing, spreadsheets, and databases

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college in archaeology or anthropology, and two field seasons, of at least two months duration each, in archaeology.

Substitution: One year of graduate study at an accredited university in anthropology or archaeology may be substituted for one season of field experience.
