The Department of Anthropology in the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Arkansas invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Anthropological Archaeology to start in August 2025. This is a standard nine-month faculty appointment. This is one of two archaeology positions currently being advertised in the department; applicants wishing to be considered for both must submit materials for each position separately.
The geographic and temporal areas of specialization for this position are open. We seek candidates who will complement and/or expand upon existing program strengths. The archaeology program currently is strong in public archaeology and archaeometry, including environmental, zooarchaeological, spatial, and materials analyses.
The successful candidate will demonstrate an active field and/or laboratory research program supported by extramural funding, can produce peer-reviewed publications, and provide impactful undergraduate and graduate educational experiences. Candidates should also demonstrate through teaching, mentorship, research, and service a commitment to establishing a scholarly environment for all.
We especially invite applications from candidates who are committed to developing collaborative research within the Department of Anthropology, as well as with colleagues in cognate environmental and area studies programs and other units such as the Arkansas Archeological Survey, the University of Arkansas Stable Isotope Lab, the Center for Advanced Spatial Technologies, and the Arkansas Humanities Center. We encourage applicants to view the University’s current Strategic Plan and Signature Research Areas.
Regular, reliable, and non-disruptive attendance is an essential job duty, as is the ability to create and maintain collegial, harmonious working relationships with others.
Duties will include:
40% Teaching
40% Research
20% Service
Minimum Qualifications:
With submitted materials, the candidate must demonstrate
- Ph.D. in anthropology or a closely related field from an accredited institution of higher education conferred by the start of appointment.
- An active research program in anthropological archaeology
Preferred Qualifications:
- Demonstrated theoretical and methodological expertise that complements or expands on existing program foci
- A strong record of national/international scholarship including extramural funding and peer-reviewed publications
- Ability to effectively teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses and to develop new curricula that complement and expand the current course catalog
- Demonstrated ability to mentor undergraduate and graduate students in independent research
- Demonstrated commitment to cultivating a scholarly environment for all through teaching, mentoring, research, outreach, and service.
