JOB SUMMARY:

Under the general supervision of the Department of Cultural Resources Director, the Archaeologist I performs various support functions and investigative research related to the cultural resource program, which is tasked with preserving and managing the cultural resources of the Hualapai people. The Archaeologist I will be expected to plan and execute projects of varying size from start to finish, adhering to standards established by the Tribal Historic Preservation Office (THPO), the Hualapai Cultural Resources Ordinance, and the Secretary of the Interior's Standards. The Senior Archaeologist will prepare, review, and/or oversee cultural resource sections related to National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) compliance documents on the Hualapai Indian Reservation, as well as off the Reservation within the ancestral homeland. The Archaeologist will work with cultural resource staff and sub-contractors in conducting field investigations and evaluations of identified properties to meet the Department's needs. The incumbent may also conduct ethnohistorical, ethnobotanical, archival, and other cultural resource related studies, as assigned.

EMPLOYMENT DUTIES AND FUNCTIONS:

Archaeologist I will assist in preparation of cultural resource reports and site records, and, in collaboration with the Department Director/THPO, maintain GIS databases and archives of manuscripts, images, and audio-video recordings for long-term preservation and management. The incumbent develops recommendations for the Director/THPO regarding the identification and treatment of historic properties affected by projects within the Reservation boundaries, and within the ancestral homeland that may be affected by Federal, State, County, and other undertakings. The position requires review and comments on contractor archaeological reports and other documents to ensure that such products meet Tribal and Federal standards. Under the supervision of the Director/THPO, the Senior

Archaeologist I will coordinate with Federal and State agencies regarding Hualapai cultural resources, both on and off the Hualapai Reservation, including the State Historic Preservation Officer (SHPO) and the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP).

  • Must be able to plan and perform archaeological fieldwork and report preparation, such as surveys, from start to finish, including supervising staff and contract personnel.
  • Must be able to prepare, review, and/or oversee cultural resource compliance documents.
  • Must be able to conduct or assist with ethnographic interviews with elders.
  • Must be able to communicate orally & in writing in English (with Hualapai a plus).
  • Must be able to keep accurate daily field records and reports.
  • Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions.
  • Must be able to orient by using topographic maps, GPS devices, or compass.
  • Must be able to use other fieldwork tools, such as (but not limited to) measuring devices, digital cameras, camcorders and audio/visual equipment.
  • Must have working knowledge of ArcGIS software, including map preparation and geodatabase management.
  • Ability to recognize Pre-Contact and Historic artifacts and cultural features.
  • Assist staff and provide technical support in field and office settings. Includes: assisting with development of resource management recommendations, assessing project effects on resources, and providing support to address complex resource problems and issues that require advanced technical or regulatory knowledge.
  • Collaborate with Tribal, local, state, and federal agencies, scientists, planners, regulators, and other stakeholders.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.


EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, AND/OR SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor's degree in Anthropology, Archaeology or related field
  • Preferred 1+ years of field experience in archaeological surveys and reconnaissance
  • Knowledge of GPS equipment and applications is critical
  • Familiarity with Hualapai and Arizona cultural resources and associated regulatory environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Preferred experience working with private, public sector clients, and regulatory agencies.
  • Ability to translate between science, planning, engineering, and policy.
  • A blend of strategic and tactical thinking.
  • A desire to excel and passion for rewarding work on complex environmental challenges.
  • Working knowledge of NEPA, NHPA, and other state and federal environmental regulations.
  • Use of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Access.
  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Must have valid driver's license and eligible for the Tribe's insurance.
  • Must have a valid Fingerprint Clearance Card.
  • Must be able to work with minimal supervision.
  • General knowledge of the Hualapai Reservation preferred, with some Hualapai language fluency a plus.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, some nights, weekends and holidays.
  • Submit to and pass a pre-employment drug/alcohol screening and random test thereafter.
