Position Details

Title: Assistant Professor of Anthropological Archaeology

Appointment Status: Tenure Track

Location: Indianapolis

Position Summary:

The Department of Sociology and Anthropology within the IU School of Liberal Arts at Indiana University Indianapolis (IU Indy) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Anthropological Archaeology with a specialization in North American historical and/or precontact archaeology. The position begins August 1, 2025 and applicants are expected to have a Ph.D. in Anthropology or a closely related field completed by the start date. This position is benefits-eligible with the opportunity for promotion.

The successful candidate will demonstrate potential for excellence in both research and teaching. We are particularly interested in candidates who integrate the institution’s emphasis on interdisciplinary and applied research that foregrounds descendant communities. The candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in our anthropology curriculum, archaeological method and theory, cultural resource management (CRM), and courses in their geographic and analytical area(s) of expertise (e.g., paleoethnobotany, geoarchaeology, etc.). Contingent on logistics and budgeting, the candidate will also have an opportunity to offer summer or local semester-long field schools. The position carries a 2-2 teaching load contingent on research productivity. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience.

The Department of Sociology and Anthropology has 14 full-time faculty members, over 100 undergraduate majors, 120 undergraduate minors, and 10 graduate students in our MA Program in Applied Anthropology. Our undergraduate and MA programs emphasize applied research, stakeholder collaboration, and career readiness, especially as it relates to employment opportunities in CRM-related archaeology, as well as state and federal agencies. Meanwhile, our interdisciplinary Museum Studies Program offers courses and internships for students interested in cultural heritage careers.
