The Department of Anthropology at the University of Pittsburgh invites applications for a full-time, tenure-stream Assistant Professor or Advanced Assistant Professor in medical anthropology beginning Fall 2025, pending budgetary approval. We seek candidates whose work merges the study of health inequities with themes including (but not limited to) race and racial ideology, trauma and resilience, environmental pollution/(in)justice, slow violence, migration, food and nutrition, or disability. We particularly encourage applicants whose research has involved substantive community engagement, and who will be ready to teach and mentor students in participatory methodologies and engaged/public/activist anthropology. This candidate would become a key part of the Department’s Joint Degree PhD-MPH Program. Regional focus is open and should complement existing departmental strengths; however, research in North America will receive special attention. Finally, we welcome candidates whose expertise relates “Race and Social Determinants of Equity, Health and Well-being,” which was the focus of a recent cluster hire at Pitt.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Anthropology or a closely related field at the time of appointment. Priority will be given to candidates with research and teaching expertise in Medical Anthropology and complement the existing strengths of the program including, but not limited to Science and Technology Studies; Environment and the Anthropocene; Labor Precarity, Politics; Mobility, Migration, and Citizenship; Language, Media, and Circulation; and Crisis and Futures. The successful candidate is expected to have and maintain an active research program and pursue external funding; attract, advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students; and have the potential and desire for innovative collaboration with other communities and institutions within and beyond the University. They will contribute to departmental and wider university administration and participate in the intellectual life of the department.

Teaching responsibilities will include two courses in the fall term and two courses in the spring term in the Department of Anthropology, at undergraduate and graduate levels, including large lecture courses, smaller undergraduate seminars, and graduate core, professionalization, and elective courses. The applicant will be expected to develop undergraduate and graduate courses that reflect their area of expertise.

Inquiries should be sent to the Committee Chair: Dr. Gabriella Lukacs lukacs@pitt.edu

Closing Date: Friday, November 1.
