How You Will Contribute
Through collaborative cross-museum teams, Audience Research bridges internal assumptions about audiences and their experiences with data and analytical insights to improve and expand our engagement and impact. Our expertise in proven research methods uniquely qualifies us to test hypotheses and solutions, measure outputs, and evaluate outcomes to facilitate visitor-oriented decision making. We value including audiences in planning and responding to their experiences in service of their needs and interests.
Reporting to the Director of Audience Research in the Learning & Engagement Division, the Audience Research Manager implements audience research and evaluation projects at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The Audience Research Manager is responsible for the coordination and oversight of on-site and online survey operations. The Audience Research Manager plays an important role in data collection, management, and analysis, and supports the Director of Audience Research in the planning of quantitative and qualitative studies and reporting of findings. The Audience Research Manager supervises a data collection team of 4-6 part-time employees.
Specifically, you will:
The responsibilities of the Audience Research Manager span these core functions:
Research and Evaluation Planning
- Support the Director of Audience Research by planning research and evaluation projects, including meeting with internal staff, developing research methodologies, and drafting procedures and protocols to execute projects.
Research and Evaluation Operations
- Plan and manage field schedules as appropriate to project goals
- Create and manage field materials, data collection instruments, interview guides, and other tools.
- Manage Survey Assistant staff (recruitment, training, coaching, scheduling).
- Conduct on-site surveys and interviews with visitors and conduct observations of visitors in galleries and other museum spaces.
- Use web-hosted resource to create and deploy e-surveys.
- Work with others across departments to source internal data for research and evaluation projects (i.e., generate lists for e-surveys, etc.).
Quantitative and Qualitative Data Management, Analysis, and Reporting
- Process, clean, and code data from a variety of platforms and sources.
- Conduct quantitative and qualitative analyses using MS Excel, MS Access, SPSS Statistics, and/or web-hosted tools as appropriate.
- Design/create accurate and clear data visualizations.
- Write and proof reports presenting analyses of data, interpreting results, identifying trends, and synthesizing findings across projects as appropriate.
Benchmarking and Dashboarding
- Work with others to compile/maintain datasets that benchmark and track internal and external data.
- Contribute to divisional and institutional dashboards.
Communications
- Attend departmental and project meetings, as appropriate, and conduct project-specific meetings as needed.
- Present results and findings to colleagues across the museum in virtual and in-personal settings.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Your background and experience include:
- B.A. or B.S., in a field related to social science research (e.g., psychology, education, statistics, anthropology, business, etc.).
- Two years related experience in audience research and evaluation, visitor studies, UX research, and/or marketing research.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, online survey platforms, and SPSS Statistics, or other statistical package.
- Knowledge of quantitative and qualitative evaluation methods and analysis techniques.
- Strong analytical and quantitative skills, including statistics.
- Strong qualitative skills, including ability to conduct structured and semi-structured interviews with visitors.
- Strong interpersonal, written, and visual communication skills.
- Ability to work independently on assigned tasks with minimal direct supervision.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Strong interest in cultural organizations, non-profit organizations, informal learning, leisure research, marketing research, and/or tourism.
Position and Compensation Details
- The salary for this position is $63,433.
- This position is Full-Time, Exempt, and 35 hours per week.
- The schedule for this position is Monday to Friday from 9:00am to 5:00pm with occasional evening, weekend, and holiday hours on an as needed project-basis.
- This position reports to the Director of Audience Research.
- Physical requirements:
- Able to remain stationary for extended periods of time, to utilize computers and other office equipment required of this job, to perform physically administrative duties in a typical interior office environment, gallery, or exhibit space, and to access most public and staff areas of the museum campus
- Minor moving of items weighing no more than 20 pounds
- Able to hold and use hand-held data collection equipment including clipboards, iPads, and pencils
- Able to move through crowded public spaces easily for hours at a time to accomplish goals of the position
- Background check required after a conditional job offer is made. Consideration of the background check will be tailored to the requirements of the job.
