Description

Principal Function: The DEAI Interpretation Specialist is responsible for engaging guests on Conner Prairie grounds with DEAI-focused programming following the organization's commitment to inclusion and belonging for all humans while exemplifying the mission, vision and values of the organization.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Executes daily and specialty programming related to DEAI initiatives at Conner Prairie.
  • Displays mastery of interpretive techniques in scripted performances, first, second and third-person interactions and process demonstration.
  • Facilitates conversations with guests around DEAI-related topics and themes.
  • Collaborates with other front-facing interpreters and educators to insure consistent guest messaging across various Conner Prairie experiences.
  • Communicates with CPM leadership regarding staff and guest needs when engaging with DEAI-related programming, partnerships and training.
  • Recognizes and proactively diffuses problematic guest reactions to difficult narratives through CPM de-escalation techniques. See required training expectations.
  • Maintains all necessary certifications and continuing education to ensure the highest level of knowledge within the areas of inclusion, belonging and de-escalation techniques.
  • Participates in training and research as needed and periodically takes a leading role in training fellow staff members.
  • Upholds the highest standards of guest care.
  • Takes an active role in planning and executing DEAI-related training for front-line staff.
  • Participates on DEAI committees both internally and externally to the organization.
  • Commits to being a lifelong learner, staying curious and learning alongside guests and colleagues.

  • Supervisory Responsibilities: This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

    Education and/or Experience: High School Diploma or general education degree (GED) required; Bachelor's Degree in history, anthropology, communication or related museum field desired or 4 years equivalent combination of education and experience. Must have previous experience as an interpreter or facilitator, preferably in a museum setting. Must have experience and training related to DEAI programming and initiatives. Must have training in de-escalation techniques.

    Training Expectations (Must be completed within 90 days of start date in position):

    Attending employer-provided continuing education is required.
    • ICSOC (International Coalition of Sites of Conscience) Dialogic Interpretation Sessions 1-7
      • Defining Dialogue, The Arc of Dialogue, Dialogic Questions, Context and Story, Containers for Dialogue, Activities in Dialogue, Managing Conflict in Dialogue
    • Group Training Sessions through ICSOC
    • Ongoing De-escalation training
    • De-escalation Strategies for Libraries, Archives and Museum Staff (online certification) https://learn.webjunction.org.

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is exposed to working in wet or humid conditions (non-weather), and outdoor weather conditions. The employee will occasionally work near moving mechanical parts, in high, precarious places, near fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold (non-weather), extreme heat (non-weather), risk of electrical shock, and work with explosives. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.

    Conner Prairie is generally open from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday, this position will be required to work beyond these hours and when open for special events.
