Duties

As the Museum Specialist you will:
  • Transport photographs across the campus, pulling art objects from both departmental and registrar-controlled storerooms, and reviewing images to confirm proper orientation and object identification.
  • Ensure the safe housing and care of the photographs collection.
  • Rehouse objects as necessary. This includes lifting heavy boxes, creating lists from TMS (The Museum System database) and accurately pulling works of art from the boxes to create new boxes. Identify appropriate size and classification for home locations.
  • Move works to these locations and then run new box lists for the new home locations.
  • Catalog photographs, albums and volumes designated for offsite storage.
  • Use the Department of Photographs cataloguing and style guide, accurately and consistently recording cataloguing information in TMS (media, dimensions, inscriptions, etc.)
  • Assist Department of Photographs Curatorial Coordinator with documenting incoming acquisitions, including the preparation of object records in TMS. Assist Curatorial Coordinator with preparations for the annual donor meeting for the department of photographs and gallery board meetings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to assist curators and other department staff.

Qualifications

Candidates must meet the Qualification Standards Handbook requirements for the GS-1016-9. For this position, Candidates must possess at least one year of specialized experience, equivalent in responsibility to the GS-7 level in the Federal service, organizing and cataloguing works of art for a museum or similar cultural institution.

Those applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements will be evaluated against these factors to determine the best-qualified candidates.
  • Skill in organizing and moving works of art.
  • Knowledge of proper artwork storage techniques.
  • Ability to catalog photographs, albums and volumes.
  • Knowledge of automated systems sufficient to support the department's use and implementation of new technologies and collaborate with colleagues within PXD, other areas of the National Gallery and individuals at outside organizations to complete projects; perform tasks such as word processing, database, and spreadsheet programs in performing functions such as preparing reports, researching inquiries, reporting time and attendance, and preparing travel arrangements.
  • Knowledge of art history, particularly the history of photography.

  • Other Relevant Eligibility Criteria: Must be able to bend and stoop. Travel to offsite storage location in Lanham may be required. Must be able to lift 30 pounds.

    Education

    Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-5 and above): Experience related to the operation or management of a museum or similar collection of valuable objects. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include collections management, registration, cataloging, research, preservation, restoration, or conservation of collections of museum material, or other experience related to the position to be filled. Most positions require a particular subject-matter specialization, e.g., aeronautics, anthropology, art, geology, history, natural science, technology, biology, or zoology.2 full academic years of progressively higher level graduate education or master's or equivalent graduate degree related to the position

    Undergraduate and Graduate Education: For GS-3 positions, education may have been in any field of study. For positions at GS-4 and above, related course work is required. Related fields of study include art, history, museum studies, scientific subjects, or other courses related to the position to be filled.
