Duties

As the Museum Specialist, you will:

• Perform treatments to the finish and structure of frames owned by the National Gallery for the purpose of outgoing loans. Treatments include restoring the finish of frames, establishing structural stability, or making modifications to fit and secure the painting within the frame.
• Remain aware of the outgoing loan schedule and coordinate frame treatments with the Division of Registrar to ensure all frames are ready for loan.
• Remain aware of the Painting Conservation department treatment schedule so that frame treatments might be coordinated accordingly.
• Coordinate the administrative aspects of loan approvals and scheduling platforms.

Qualifications

Candidates must meet the Qualification Standards Handbook requirements for the GS-1016-11. For this position, Candidates must possess at least one year of experience, equivalent in responsibility to the GS-9 grade level in the Federal service, treating wooden objects for the purpose of conserving them.

Knowledge of technical examination procedures, sufficient to make appropriate treatment decisions.

Ability to perform administrative aspects of loan approvals and scheduling.

Other Relevant Eligibility Criteria:

Requires work indoors and outdoors in all-weather types. Requires dexterity sufficient to design elements accurately and operate tools safely. Requires ability to walk. Requires safe use of dangerous equipment. Requires work in loud and dusty spaces. Requires ability to stand for long periods of time. Requires work on scaffolds and at heights up to 40' off the floor. Must be able to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds, without assistance. Requires extended exposure to eye, skin, nose and lung irritation from glue, bonding chemicals, and vapors. Must be able to nail and saw lumber. Requires availability for occasional duty time outside of normal work hours.

Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-5 and above): Experience related to the operation or management of a museum or similar collection of valuable objects. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include collections management, registration, cataloging, research, preservation, restoration, or conservation of collections of museum material, or other experience related to the position to be filled. Most positions require a particular subject-matter specialization, e.g., aeronautics, anthropology, art, geology, history, natural science, technology, biology, or zoology.
