About the opportunity

SWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking an Associate Project Archaeologist to join our team reporting to the Portland, Oregon office and performing work primarily in Idaho supporting transmission and renewable projects.

For an Associate Project Archaeologist - Field Lead position, a key element of your job will be to independently supervise an archaeological survey crew in the field.

What you will accomplish
  • Perform archaeological fieldwork and provide assistance to project managers with various field tasks.
  • Lead and coordinate the progress of the field crew and facilitate daily data transfer.
  • Prepare accurate and detailed daily monitoring reports.
  • Collect, organize, and conduct quality assurance and quality control for field data.
  • Potentially assist with technical reporting as needed.
  • Uphold SWCA's high standard of scientific ethics and assurance, demonstrating the ability to identify and creatively resolve challenges.
  • As an Assistant Project Archaeologist, you will supervise a crew while conducting archaeological survey fieldwork. This includes:
  • independently assigning and directing the activities of others on behalf of SWCA, often in remote areas without immediate guidance from senior managers, to ensure quality and on-time delivery;
  • ensuring that employees understand their responsibilities and delegated tasks and being held accountable if crew members under your supervision are not performing their activities correctly, productively, and safely;
  • serving as a conduit of communication between employees and senior managers, including communicating issues to relevant senior managers;
  • receiving and resolving complaints from employees in the field; and
  • monitoring team productivity and providing timely performance feedback, including deciding when disciplinary action is necessary and delivering discipline.

Experience and qualifications for success

Required Qualifications:
  • Ability to be added to SWCA's Idaho BLM Cultural Resource Use Permit for the Great Basin region, which includes:
  • Bachelor's degree in archaeology, anthropology, or a closely related field
  • Minimum of one (1) year of professional cultural resources management experience involving a variety of field methods, including survey, testing, and excavation
  • Previous experience leading and supervising archaeological survey crews in the field
  • Minimum of 4 months of professional cultural resources management experience in the Great Basin
  • Possession of a current valid driver's license and the capability to safely operate a four-wheel-drive vehicle on rugged backcountry roads.
  • Ability to travel to various locations and conduct fieldwork for extended hours, sometimes in adverse weather conditions, rugged terrain, and at high altitudes. Must be able to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Meets the Secretary of the Interior's Professional Qualification Standards for archaeology.
  • Demonstrated leadership and supervision abilities, including problem-solving, constructive conflict resolution, and decision-making skills.

An employee in this Idaho based position can expect an hourly pay rate of $29.00-37.00 /hour. Actual pay within this range may depend on experience, qualifications, geographic location, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law. Regular-status employees are also eligible for performance bonuses.
