The Cultural Resources Office (CRO) is seeking a full-time Senior Repatriation Specialist. The Specialist provides key support to the leader of Cultural Resources, ensuring compliance with the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) and international repatriation initiatives. This position is a subject-matter expert for external requests, conducting research, coordinating repatriations and collaborating closely with federal agencies.
Ideal candidates will possess exceptional research and analytical skills, including the ability to conduct in-depth investigations related to repatriation claims and relevant collections. Additionally, strong organizational and documentation abilities, ensuring accurate and comprehensive recording of repatriation-related information, are highly valued. Other valuable skills include excellent communication and interpersonal skills, enabling effective collaboration with external partners, federal agencies and Indigenous communities and a demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team. A track record of adaptability in a fast-paced work environment and a strong commitment to ethical practices in repatriation and the preservation of Indigenous cultural heritage are also important.

The expected salary range for the Senior Repatriation Specialist is $70,000/annual - $80,000/annual. The AMNH offers an extensive benefits package designed to meet the needs of our dedicated and diverse community.
Pay will be determined based on several factors. The hiring range for the position at commencement is based on the type of work and the scope of responsibilities. The salary and placement offered is based on a number of individualized factors, including, but not limited to, skills, knowledge, training, education, credentials, areas of specialization and depth and scope of experience.

Job duties include:
- Serve as one of two primary points of contact and act as a subject-matter expert for external requests for information pertaining to ethnographic, archaeological and biological collections originating from the United States and Canada.
- Create and maintain records of consultations in the CRO portion of the division of Anthropology database.
- Conduct comprehensive research to support NAGPRA inventory re-evaluations, repatriation requests and collections relevant to repatriation efforts, ensuring accuracy and thoroughness in all research activities.
- Provide key assistance in collections reviews and actively participate in the coordination of repatriation processes, which may involve hands-on work with artifacts and remains.
- Monitor and stay informed about NAGPRA-related issues at the national level and actively engage in NAGPRA Review Committee meetings, contributing expertise and insights.
- Draft critical documents such as repatriation reports, Notices of Intent to Repatriation and Inventory Completion, ensuring compliance with NAGPRA regulations and ethical standards.
- Document collections that are designated for or likely to undergo repatriation in the future, maintaining detailed records.
- Collaborate closely with federal agencies regarding federal collections housed at the Museum, facilitating communication and coordination to meet compliance requirements.
- Assist with repatriation of Anthropological collections, including preparing material and human remains for transport, communication with affiliated lineal descendants and tribes regarding place and manner of repatriation.
- Manage activities that necessitate proximity to and handling of human remains and other sensitive items.
