Position Overview

Position Summary:

Under limited direction and indirect supervision, assist the Director in managing the operational, financial, and personnel management activities of the Blackwater Draw Museum and associated collections.

Requirements

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Oversee the daily operations of the museum, including visitor services, programs, housekeeping, and building safety and security
  • Supervise and participate in interpretive tours, workshops, and interactions with public visitors and special interest groups/persons
  • Supervise and support the Museum Collection Specialist by participating in collections projects
  • Supervise and participate in the Museum and Site's exhibit and associated artifact collections curation, preservation, and management.
  • Supervise and participate in the management of photographic, document archives, and data files and maintain museum digital inventory using PastPerfect
  • Supervise and participate in the Museum and Site's exhibit design, development, or modification
  • Perform professional and public interactions/activities "off site," such as public events
  • Supervise, train, and coordinate the scheduling of museum and site student employees, interns, and volunteers
  • Coordinate marketing and promotion of museum exhibits and programs in the community, including social media
  • Develop the museum's operating budget under the supervision of the Site Director. Track, analyze, and report on the financial status of the museum including financial receipts, deposits and related paperwork activities such as ordering/purchasing stock and supplies
  • Assist the Director in the Museum's long-range fiscal planning and budget management
  • Seek grants, donations, or other alternative funding sources to support existing and new collections and programs
  • Act as a liaison and maintain a positive relationship with the Portales Chamber of Commerce, local galleries and museums, local schools, local archaeological societies, and other appropriate organizations
  • Serve on department and university committees and working groups
  • Contribute to the Department of Anthropology initiatives including providing internships, student research projects, and recruitment
  • Review and remain current regarding professional and technical literature in museum studies, including development in collection management best practices, and anthropology/archaeology research; participate in professional and community organizations
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Master's degree in museum studies or related discipline
  • Demonstrable knowledge and one year of experience in the field of anthropology/archaeology
  • A valid New Mexico Driver's License or the ability to obtain one within 30 days of employment is also required, as well as the ability to safely operate a motor vehicle in all kinds of weather and road conditions
  • One year of experience with museum collections and related database management preferred

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
  • Candidate should demonstrate a proven ability for public speaking, public relations, giving tours, and technical writing
  • Demonstrated technology and computer skills, including Office 360, Adobe Creative Cloud, and digital scanning technologies. Understanding and knowledge of museum provided equipment and software
  • Proficiency in video software, social media platforms, digital collections, and online curriculum guides
  • Ability to work collaboratively to achieve organizational and department goals.

  • Ability to read and transmit written and oral instructions; to observe and use safe working conditions, and be proficient in cultural heritage/museum practices, especially collections management
  • Ability to deal tactfully and communicate effectively over the phone, online, and in person with people of all ages and economic backgrounds
  • Knowledge of proper care of ethnographic and archaeological collections.
  • Knowledge of and experience with facility administration and operations, preferably with archaeological sites and museums
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; attention to detail; planning and organizational skills; strong interpersonal skills; and excellent customer service skills
  • Ability to analyze, problem solve, formulate, and recommend solutions
  • Highly self-motivated, innovative, and collaborative
  • Experience with budget preparation and financial management

Working Conditions

Physical Demand and Working Conditions:
  • Work is performed both inside and outside during scheduled hours of operations
  • Some evening and/or weekend work may be required
  • Work is moderately active in nature that at times requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or a moderate amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
  • Work sometimes includes walking for long distances and up inclines.
