The Sarasota County Department of Libraries and Historical Resources is looking for a full-time Archaeologist. This team member will be responsible for identifying and protecting archaeological resources throughout the county, as well as educating the public about them.
The Archaeologist will be part of the team that operates the Sarasota County History Center in Osprey, Florida. The History Center has two main functions: (1) administering Sarasota County's historic preservation programs, and (2) promoting the study and enjoyment of local and regional history through public programming, exhibits, and access to our collections for research purposes.
This is a particularly exciting time for the Sarasota County History Center, as we are now in the process of building a brand-new 30,000-square-foot facility to house our collections and make them more accessible through exhibits and public programming. The Archaeologist will have the opportunity to help prepare the archaeological elements of our collection for this transition and imagine new ways to engage the public in our new building.
About The Position
The Archaeologist's most essential duty is to identify and protect archaeological resources around the county by actively participating in the county's development review process. Sarasota County is a Certified Local Government whose historic preservation ordinance provides a variety of tools and options for protecting these important assets. In addition to resource protection, the Archaeologist also plays a leading role in maintaining the History Center's extensive collection of archaeological artifacts and specimens, and engages the public to foster better understanding and awareness of the county's archaeological resources.
Here's a more specific breakdown of the Archivist's responsibilities:
Development Review:
- Reviews development proposals for their potential impact on archaeological resources within the County's jurisdiction.
- Refines and implements predictive modeling strategies to assess the potential presence of archaeological resources in areas where development activities are proposed to take place.
- Conducts site visits when necessary to assess potential presence of archaeological resources and potential impact of proposed developments.
- Works with applicants throughout the development review process to design and implement strategies to either avoid, mitigate, or minimize adverse effects to archaeological resources according to applicable federal, state and local laws.
- When resources are available, conducts archaeological investigations for the County and when fortuitous finds are discovered on development sites.
- Represents the Division of Historical Resources on the County's Development Review Committee.
- Ensures compliance with unmarked Human Burial laws on county and/or private lands.
Customer Service:
- Implements standards of service that ensure the prompt and efficient resolution of all inquiries by internal and external customers, delivered with the utmost courtesy and respect.
- Produces promotional and educational information (including exhibits, flyers, brochures and maps) to inform citizens, County staff and other agencies on the nature and value of archaeological resources in the County.
- Gives presentations to community groups and local agencies to enhance understanding and promote preservation of archaeological resources within the County.
- Collaborates with other County departments to identify, document, protect and promote knowledge of archaeological resources within the County.
- Develops community partnerships to document and foster awareness of archaeological resources within the County.
Site and Collection Management:
- Analyzes and catalogs archaeological artifacts from the Sarasota County History Center's collection.
- Oversees the work of volunteers and interns who participate in the analysis and cataloging of archaeological artifacts in the History Center's collections.
- Prepares Florida Site File forms and nominations to the local and national registers of historic places for archaeological resources within Sarasota County.
- Review proposals for the local historic designation of archaeological resources in accordance with Article IV of Chapter 66 of the Sarasota County Code.
About the Schedule
- Full-Time, 40 hours per week.
- Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
About You
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related field and Two (2) years of professional experience directly related to the position.
- Valid Florida Driver's License by date of hire.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree from an accredited college or university in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related field and Three (3) years, or more, of professional experience in cultural resource management.
Subject to Passing Substance Screening: This position is subject to passing a pre-employment substance screening. An applicant who fails to pass a required drug screening test shall be disqualified from employment in any class for a period of five (5) years.
Physical Demands: This position may occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 lbs.

Starting Pay Range: $55,577.60 - $60,008.00
