What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position?

The government-wide direct hire authority for Research Statistician (Biology) 1530 is being used to fill this position.

Salary: $78,044(Step 01) to $101,454 (Step 10); NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired at the Step 01.

As a Research Statistician (Biology) within the Western Fisheries Research Center, some of your specific duties will include:
  • This position will be a vital member of WFRC, working directly with the researchers to develop and test innovative statistical tools, design research projects, analyze and interpret results, and disseminate information.
  • The incumbent plans project details, establishes work priorities, and defines details of executing the study. The incumbent consults regularly with the supervisor on progress and future plans and may propose changes to the work.
  • Decides what needs to be done by understanding the research question; considering multiple potential approaches and exploring those to arrive at a solution. The incumbent bases interpretations, forecasts, and recommendations on statistical findings.
  • Prepare descriptive scientific reports on the results of research activities for USGS publication and administrative use.
  • Attend scientific and interagency meetings to present his/her own research results and exchange information within the scientific community.
  • Operates a government owned or leased vehicle as an incidental driver.

Physical Demands

Office and laboratory work is primarily sedentary. However, limited field work may involve strenuous exertion including prolonged walking over wet, rocky surfaces and intermittent to prolonged climbing, lifting, pushing, balancing, crouching, stooping, bending, stretching and reaching while remaining alert in order to avoid unsafe situations. The position includes the potential exposure to inclement weather, physical exertion and long hours in the field.

Work Environment

The work is primarily in the office but some work may be conducted outdoors. The office is adequately lit, heated and ventilated. Temperature and weather extremes are encountered while performing outdoor work

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Statistician, all grade levels.

A. Degree: that included 15 semester hours in statistics (or in mathematics and statistics, provided at least 6 semester hours were in statistics), and 9 additional semester hours in one or more of the following: physical or biological sciences, medicine, education, or engineering; or in the social sciences including demography, history, economics, social welfare, geography, international relations, social or cultural anthropology, health sociology, political science, public administration, psychology, etc. Credit toward meeting statistical course requirement should be given for courses in which 50 percent of the course content appears to be statistical methods, e.g., courses that included studies in research methods in psychology or economics such as tests and measurements or business cycles, or courses in methods of processing mass statistical data such as tabulating methods or electronic data processing.

B. Combination of education and experience-course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The experience should have included a full range of professional statistical work such as (a) sampling, (b) collecting, computing, and analyzing statistical data, and (c) applying statistical techniques such as measurement of central tendency, dispersion, skewness, sampling error, simple and multiple correlation, analysis of variance, and tests of significance.
