Job Details

The Department of Anthropology at Bates College is seeking to hire a sociocultural anthropologist for a one-year position, starting August 1, 2024. Candidates with a demonstrated commitment to the success of historically underrepresented, marginalized, and first-generation students are encouraged to apply. The position is open with regard to the area of specialization and region of interest, but we are especially interested in scholars who will expand the department’s curriculum and course offerings. Given the interdisciplinary nature of anthropology, the successful candidate will have thought expansively about how to link their courses to a broader liberal arts curriculum. The successful candidate will have a good knowledge of/experience with inclusive pedagogies in their scholarship and classroom teaching. The successful candidate will teach ANTH 101 (Cultural Anthropology) in the Fall semester. Other courses will be determined in consultation with other members of the department.

The teaching load for this position is five courses across the academic year, distributed over two semesters and a four-week short term in May. Candidates with demonstrated success in supporting underrepresented and marginalized students are strongly encouraged to apply. Ph.D. is preferred, ABD will be considered.

Candidates will be considered beginning May 15, 2024, and continuing until the position is filled. Your application should include your cover letter (which should discuss how you design your syllabi and engage in pedagogical and research practices that foster equity and inclusion), CV, and a syllabus for the introductory course “Cultural Anthropology.” We will ask for three letters of recommendation from the candidates shortlisted for the position.

Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background check.
