Position Description

Advertised Job Summary

Incumbent reports to the State Underwater Archaeologist, Head, Maritime Research Division. Undertakes underwater archaeological management and research by planning and conducting archaeological research, develops public educational and outreach offerings, administers the review and compliance of development projects, oversees the technical and logistical aspects of survey and diving operations, supervises the operation, use and maintenance of Division assets including boats, vehicles and equipment, and trains staff on their proper use, and supports other activities as directed by the Division head to meet Division goals. The incumbent will also meet and maintain SCIAA's Dive Safety & Control Board scientific diving requirements. Position requires travel within the state for fieldwork, presentations, and meetings.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in archaeology, anthropology, or historical archaeology and 2 years' experience which may be substituted by equivalent combination of certification, training, education, and/or experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Ph.D. in archaeology, anthropology or historical archaeology, with a specialization in nautical, maritime, or underwater archaeology from a recognized program; or a master's degree in archaeology, anthropology or historical archaeology, with a specialization in nautical, maritime, or underwater archaeology from a recognized program, and one years of professional experience, including relevant fieldwork, personnel supervision and advanced research.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

Applicant must demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of archaeological principles, field research logistics, and public education. Essential abilities include: public speaking and public relations, ability to prepare and publish reports, scholarly articles and book chapters, marine remote sensing operation, and black water research diving. SCUBA certification essential. Experience with using relational databases and Geographical Information Systems, including ArcView and ArcGIS software is essential.

Plan and conduct archaeological research, including historical and archival, fieldwork including archaeological surveys, site-specific and regional, excavation and documentation; Analyze archaeological and historical data; Write reports, public, and scholarly articles, and present professional and public talks and lectures; Seeks grants, contracts and partnership opportunities and write grants proposals for the Division.

Function as the education and outreach coordinator, including planning, developing, and facilitating public educational and outreach programs, which comprise field training courses, workshops, presentations, and special events; Acts as liaison with the sport diving community, the public, professional organizations, and the professional archaeological community to further education and outreach initiatives; Acts as volunteer coordinator for projects and events which includes training volunteers; and Manages the Division website, social media platforms, and newsletters.

Reviews and responds to South Carolina Public Notice Response System, and acts in concert with the State Historic Preservation Office to ensure compliance with state and federal historic preservation regulations; Attends review and compliance meetings with Federal, State, Local, and private entities.

Oversees and maintains Division assets, namely boats, vehicles, and equipment; Assists in procuring necessary supplies and equipment; Performs routine care and maintenance of equipment; Ensures boats, vehicles and equipment in good

working order; Reports problems with equipment and other assets in need of repair or maintenance to Division head.

Assists in administering the South Carolina Underwater Antiquities Act, including achieving Division goals including research, public education, and activities related to the Hobby License Program.

Administers and assists in the planning of all aspects of the diving activities undertaken by the Division under the auspices of the Dive Safety & Control Board; Maintains scientific diver eligibility.

Maintains the Division's research files and records including catalog and database of photographic records (slides, prints, and digital images); maintain maps, plans, charts, drawings and research records for the Division.

Other duties as assigned by the State Underwater Archaeologist; Provides assistance and guidance to SCIAA and USC staff, and to the general public, related to underwater archaeology to ensure compliance with federal, state and University policies and procedures; Contributes to the overall success of the College of Arts and Sciences and SCIAA by performing all assigned duties.
