What you will do:

As an Archaeological Specialist , you will support the agency's Cultural Resource Program by providing leadership, technical expertise and coordination with Region Archaeologists, agency staff, other state, local and tribal agencies, and provide a consistent and statewide approach to cultural resource management on state park properties.

In this role, you will provide quality control and improve efficiencies for Oregon Parks and Recreation Department's (OPRD) cultural resource management program, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local laws and regulations and the documentation for environmental impact statements, environmental assessments, permit applications, and various legal findings.

Additionally, you will support OPRD with Government-to-Government relations with Oregon's nine Federally recognized Tribes, and assist with statewide training to managers and technical staff on cultural resource protection, management and policies.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Three years of experience in Archaeology or Anthropology. At least one year of the experience must be at a technical or professional level performing activities in a natural resource program such as researching and analyzing data, conducting investigations, applying pertinent laws and regulations, or coordinating and monitoring project activities;

AND
  • A Bachelor's Degree in Archaeology or Anthropology, or three additional years of related (pertinent) experience.

Note:
  • A Master's degree in Archaeology or Anthropology will substitute for up to one year of the required experience.
  • A Doctorate degree in Archaeology or Anthropology will substitute for up to two years of the required experience.
  • Preference will be given to applicants who meet the criteria as a "qualified archaeologist" under ORS 390.235.

Special Requirements:
  • To be hired, you must have a criminal and driving records check that meets OPRD Criteria at the time of hire, and throughout employment.
  • You must have a valid driver's license at the time of hire and throughout employment.

What we are looking for (Desired Attributes):
  • Working knowledge of federal and State of Oregon laws pertaining to cultural resources management.
  • Experience providing strategic leadership to teams of coworkers to ensure alignment, collaboration and open, transparent communication.
  • Experience managing programs including development of strategic goals, programmatic workplans, tools, policies, and program enhancements.
  • Experience developing, negotiating, reviewing, and managing scopes of work and budgets for archaeology evaluations, services and contracts.
  • Ability to collaborate with diverse groups of stakeholders with an end goal of managing cultural resources.
  • Experience conducting tribal consultation and engaging in Government to Government relations with sovereign tribes.
  • Proficiency in GIS software and GPS technology to conduct background research, produce technical maps and graphics, and map field attributes and cultural resource sites.
  • Knowledge of archaeology in Oregon and/or the Pacific Northwest coast.
  • Experience writing archaeology technical reports and/or cultural resources reports.
  • Ability to perform independent archaeological research at and consulting with the Oregon State Historic Preservation Office.
  • Experience in promoting a culturally competent and diverse work environment.
