This Opportunity
WSP is currently initiating a search for multiple on-call Archaeological Crew Chiefs for our Fayetteville, Arkansas office for a long-term Phase III archaeological data recovery project at five multi-component Pre-Contact archaeological sites in northwest Arkansas . The sites are located in close proximity to each other. and contain components dating from the Late Archaic through the Late Pre-Contact periods. It is probable that the sites contain the remains of the early use of plants of the Eastern Agricultural Complex, and experience on Pre-Contact sites, and with the identification and excavation of Pre-Contact features, is particularly desirable.

Our Cultural Resources Management Team are located across the United States, with over 30 cultural resources professionals housed in our offices in Louisville, Kentucky ; Lexington, Kentucky ; Kansas City, Missouri ; and Jefferson City, Missouri .
Fieldwork is expected to begin late Spring 2024 and will run through mid-to-late 2025. There will be breaks in field sessions due to weather and other factors. But due to a large backlog of additional projects, WSP can offer additional projects / employment on an on-call basis during breaks in the Phase III work, and potentially beyond the completion of the project.
This is an on-call, hourly position. Hourly rates are industry competitive ( $22.50-24.50/hour , depending on North American CRM experience and regional archaeological experience).
Candidates local to Arkansas, Missouri, eastern Oklahoma, and eastern Kansas are ideal due to work location and schedule, but all qualified applicants will be considered. WSP also has ongoing Phase I, II, and III work in other states and with additional upcoming work.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist in supervising fieldwork on multiple Phase III data recovery projects (with additional work at Phase I and II levels), with specific tasks including:
- archaeological test unit and shovel test excavation;
- excavation of cultural features;
- recovery and identification of archaeological artifacts and other materials;
- use archaeological field forms to record archaeological data, including type and number of artifacts, soil color (Munsell) and soil textures, and other relevant information;
- Document findings through detailed note taking;
- Ability to assist/lead other field team members;
- Familiarity with GPS technology is preferred;
- Work effectively as part of a team;
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures;
- Strictly abide by WSP's health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Undergraduate degree in anthropology / archaeology or a closely related field;
- Archaeological field school or similar archaeological field experience;
- At least six (6) months supervisory field experience in North American CRM archaeology;
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
- Self-motivated, physically able to conduct all aspects of fieldwork in all weather conditions, and be able to follow instructions.
Additional / Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior experience with Pre-Contact archaeological sites in Arkansas, eastern Oklahoma, and the surrounding region;
- Pre-Contact lithic artifact identification and analysis.
Additional Information:
- Single occupancy hotel rooms during the fieldwork sessions for the duration of the projects and paid directly by WSP;
- Fieldwork sessions will be 10 days on / 4 days off, with the first and last day of each 10-day as a paid travel day;
- Flat-rate per diem / meal reimbursement at $59 / day for regular work days, with 75% ($44.25) for travel days. No receipts are required;
- Transportation on workdays from hotel to work site provided by WSP, and workday begins and ends in hotel parking lot;
