VISITING ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF ANTHROPOLOGY

Union College (Schenectady, New York) seeks applicants for a one-year visiting position at the assistant professor level.  We seek socio-cultural candidates who can teach courses on environmental anthropology and who would also be able to offer courses in some of the following areas: indigeneity, environmental justice, economic anthropology, Science and Technology Studies, Religion and Environmentalism, anthropology of food, and global health.  In terms of geographic expertise we are interested in someone who works in Sub Saharan Africa, the Caribbean, Southeast Asia or amongst indigenous people of Oceania or the Americas.  But we will consider other areas not currently represented by faculty in the department. Candidates with Ph.D. in hand and teaching experience are preferred, but these qualifications are not required. The successful candidate will teach six courses over three ten-week trimesters.

The Department prides itself on strong teaching and on building relationships with students.  Department members are also active scholars who support each other’s scholarship and who value the integration of research and teaching.  Anthropology at Union contributes to many interdisciplinary programs and to the Complex Questions general education curriculum that focuses on global challenges and on social justice.  Union College offers many opportunities for both faculty and students to engage with multiple disciplines in interdisciplinary programs and unique research initiatives.  The successful hire can develop courses in their area of expertise that may contribute to the college’s interdisciplinary programs.  We believe that creating and maintaining a welcoming and diverse environment is central to our department mission.  Department members actively seek ways of fostering an inclusive and supportive classroom environment both through internal department discussions and through attending workshops offered by the college. Further information about the Anthropology Department may be found at https://www.union.edu/anthropology

Applicants should submit a digital dossier (in PDF format), including cover letter, writing sample, one or two sample syllabi, C.V., and the names and addresses of three referees through the Union college website at https://jobs.union.edu.  We will begin reviewing applications on April 15, 2024 and will continue until the position is filled. An email will be sent automatically to the references requesting a letter of recommendation after an initial screening.  Union College is a community that values cultural and intellectual pluralism as essential to the excellence of our academic program. In your cover letter, in addition to describing your research and teaching interests, please also convey how your teaching, scholarship, mentorship and/or community service might support Union’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.  This should include a statement about strategies for making the classroom an inclusive environment.

About Union College

Officially chartered in 1795, Union College is the fifth oldest liberal arts college in the country. Located in the Capital District of New York State, Union is a highly selective residential and undergraduate college, home to 2,200 students and 220 faculty, and offering 44 majors. Union was the first liberal arts college to rethink the traditional liberal arts education and adopt an engineering curriculum. That pioneering approach continues today with an education that encourages students to work beyond the limits of disciplinary boundaries, allowing them to think globally and lead innovatively in a world where problem solving requires breadth across humanities, arts, social sciences, science, and engineering. We expect all faculty members to contribute to a thriving, diverse, and inclusive learning community, while promoting a sense of belonging among students, other faculty, and staff colleagues.

As an equal opportunity employer strongly committed to student and workforce diversity, Union College will not discriminate in the recruitment or selection of faculty and staff or in any other area of employment, on the basis of age, sex, race, national origin, religion, religious belief, disability, sexuality, gender identity or expression, and veteran status. We strongly encourage applications from members of traditionally underrepresented groups.

Union College is committed to providing access and will provide reasonable accommodation in its application process to individuals with disabilities, upon request.
