Collections Management

BACKGROUND

LACMA's encyclopedic costume and textiles collection is made up of over 37,000 objects, 25% of LACMA's entire collection, representing more than 100 cultures and over 2,000 years of artistic and cultural heritage. In addition to textile-based media, the collection also includes other object types related to dress, sewing and design such as fashion plates, sewing boxes, shoes, jewelry and other accessories. The collections management department is responsible for the preservation, storage, and organization of the art collection, and plays a critical role in providing access to the collection for LACMA staff and visiting scholars.

INTERNSHIP SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Associate Collections and Installation Manager for Costume and Textiles, the Collections Management Intern for Costume and Textiles will learn day-to-day tasks performed by collections management staff while gaining greater knowledge and hands-on experience in working with costume and textiles. Shadowing collections management staff, the intern will learn best preservation practices through various tasks including inventorying the collection, using collections management systems, condition checking and housing of objects, taking documentary images, monitoring storeroom environments, and preparations for upcoming exhibitions.
