General Responsibilities:
The Terracon Pittsburgh office is seeking a Staff Archaeologist/Geophysical Specialist to work on archaeological projects, predominantly in the Mid-Atlantic states (Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland, New York, and New Jersey), but throughout the United States as necessary. Staff Archaeologist/Geophysical Specialist will serve under the direction of the Cultural Resources Group Leader and Project Managers. This is a full-time, salaried position with benefits, and reimbursement for expenses while working in the field.
Essential Roles and Responsibilities - Staff Archaeologist:
- Follow safety rules, guidelines and standards for all projects. Participate in pre-task planning. Report any safety issues or concerns to management.
- Be responsible for maintaining quality standards on all projects.
- Responsible for conducting fieldwork and writing small to medium sized, relatively uncomplicated reports.
- Manages a field crew and ensures that Field Technicians and Crew Chiefs are performing fieldwork to the highest standards.
- May serve as Principal Investigator (PI) on survey and testing projects.
- Conducts archival research or field documentation and ensures the team is recording appropriate information or conducting appropriate analyses.
- Confidently identifies artifacts and recognizes natural and cultural features/stratigraphy.
- Responsible for ensuring field forms, data collection, and sample collection are consistent, complete, accurate and follows project-specific requirements.
- Prepares simple proposals.
- Presents papers at professional conferences.
- Promote pre-task planning for all projects.
- Complete archaeology field investigations for cell tower projects within driving distance of the Pittsburgh office.
- Complete Desktop Reviews for both archaeology and above ground historic structures projects.
- Conduct background research for both archaeology and above ground historic structures projects.
- Draft pre-contact/historic contexts sections for Phase I Survey and above ground historic structure reports.
- Draft archaeology context material for Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and other Mid-Atlantic states as necessary.
Essential Roles and Responsibilities - Geophysical Specialist:
- Gain familiarity with all types of geophysical prospection (a general term referring to fieldwork projects involving sub-surface remote sensing to discover and define potential archaeological sites) to understand which methods are appropriate for specific tasks and conditions.
- Conduct research on training opportunities and attend relevant training, including with other Terracon offices with geophysical prospection capabilities.
- Determine which methods Terracon can employ, and which will require outside assistance (including from other Terracon offices).
- Advise archaeological staff on appropriate geophysical prospection techniques for specific projects.
- Conduct geophysical surveys for archaeological projects.
- Review and compile case studies for reference and for the company library (reports, journal articles, books, etc.).
Requirements:
- Graduate degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or closely related field (MA, MS, PhD) and a minimum of 2 years' related experience.
- Familiar with the cultural history of the region and surrounding areas.
- Secretary of Interior (SOI) qualified preferred.
- Valid driver's license with acceptable violation history.
Preferred Certification:
- Documented ability to write clearly and persuasively regarding archaeological and historical topics.
- Supervisory experience in archaeological fieldwork and site recordation.
- Familiarity with Mid-Atlantic prehistoric and/or historical archaeology.
- Demonstrated familiarity and use of geophysical prospection for archaeology.
- Knowledge of Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely using both written and verbal skills.
- Ability to multi-task within flexible/fluid schedules and project needs.
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks such as lifting and walking on uneven surfaces carrying at least 20 lbs. of equipment.
- Ability to work in extreme (heat/cold) weather conditions.
- Ability to obey all company safety procedures.
- Ability to pass a drug test.
- Possession of a U.S. driver's license, with acceptable violation history.
- Eligible to work in the United States without sponsorship.
