Rincon Consultants, Inc. is seeking an Archaeologist Intern to be based in our Ventura office. Under the direction of the Archaeological Program Manager, you will be responsible for supporting the Cultural Resources Group with all aspects of project execution, including conducting field survey, data collection and management, construction monitoring, resource recordation, archival research, and the preparation of technical report contributions. This internship is part-time, and the hours weekly will be determined between Rincon and the selected candidate.

Overview of Key Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assist with field surveys to inspect for the presence of cultural resources
  • Data collection and assisting with preparation of California Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) 523 Forms
  • Conduct construction monitoring for potential impacts to cultural resources
  • Manage and organize data/photographs obtained during field survey and monitoring for inclusion in technical reports
  • Conduct archival research online and at local repositories
  • Contribute to the preparation of technical reports
  • Other duties as required by cultural resources leads

This Job Might Be For You If You Have The Following:
  • Currently enrolled in Master's program in archaeology, anthropology, or closely related field
  • Strong research and writing skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, PowerPoint)
  • Ability to organize, coordinate, and execute project assignments, including adherence to budgets and schedules
  • Familiarity with and use of GPS and GIS tools desired
  • Detail-oriented, resourceful, strong time management skills, and innovative
  • Prior field school, field classes, or other practical field experience desired
  • Familiarity with CEQA and NEPA and Section 106 of the NHPA desired
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Must possess a valid California driver license, a clean driving record, and willingness to travel to project locations
Work Environment:
  • Work is performed primarily in an outdoor environment and requires ambulation and movement to enable walking or hiking on rough and/or hazardous terrain and occasional climbing, crouching, kneeling, balancing on rough terrain. Field work may involve lifting equipment (up to 25 pounds) and exposure to conditions of rain, sun/heat, wind, dust, etc., with exposure to animals, plants, wet conditions, biting insects, poison oak, etc.
  • Field work necessitates ability to occasionally travel/drive a vehicle (sight, hearing, and manual manipulation of driving mechanisms), sometimes off-highway / 4x4, cognitive ability to plan travel, use maps or GPS navigation systems
  • Periodic indoor / office work is required that includes sustained sitting and use of fingers, hands and arms to operate a computer and perform keyboard entry of data or document preparation (or equivalent with accommodation). Must also be able to operate standard office equipment (phone, copy machine, etc.)
  • Vision is required to observe environmental phenomena and the ability to record notes on observations and translate observations into text (either keyboard entry on a computer or dictation and audio translation of recording to Standard English scientific text)
  • Mental requirements include ability to organize one's own work or that of crew members; ability to recognize and observe scientific data and analyze data as well as ability to perform calculations. Must also be able to observe social and professional interactions and respond appropriately.
  • Interns are required to abide by all company health and safety procedures

The base salary for this temporary position is $27.00 per hour. At Rincon, our salary ranges are based on market median of similar jobs, according to third party salary benchmark surveys. To apply, a resume and cover letter are required as part of the application.
