Department of Anthropology
Summary of Job Duties:
The Department of Anthropology in the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Arkansas, invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Cultural Anthropology (East or Southeast Asia Specialty) to start in August 2024. This is a standard nine-month faculty appointment.
We seek a cultural anthropologist who specializes in East or Southeast Asia, and whose expertise complements department strengths. Preferred areas of scholarship include medical anthropology, the body, or gender/sexuality. The successful candidate should be prepared to teach an upper-level undergraduate class in History of Anthropological Thought and develop courses that will expand our undergraduate and graduate curricula. We especially welcome applications from candidates who are committed to building ties with programs and units across the College and the University, such as the Asian Studies program, Gender Studies, or the Medical Humanities minor.
Candidates must have completed their Ph.D. in anthropology by the start of appointment and are expected to have an active research program focused on East Asia or Southeast Asia. Previous teaching experience as instructor-of-record at the college level is preferred.
Regular, reliable, and non-disruptive attendance is an essential job duty, as is the ability to create and maintain collegial, harmonious working relationships with others.
About the Department:
The Department of Anthropology examines similarities and differences among people, lifestyles, and world views through time by the study of artifacts and material remains, the evolution of humankind and other primates, and issues such as ethnicity, gender, class, social inequity and religion. Courses help students explore many approaches to the various subfields. The Department of Anthropology at the University of Arkansas currently has 12 tenured or tenure track faculty, spanning the subdisciplines of archaeology, biological anthropology, and cultural anthropology. With submitted materials, the candidate must demonstrate:
- PhD in anthropology from an accredited institution of higher education conferred by start of employment
- An active research program focused on cultural anthropology of East Asia or Southeast Asia, with the potential to involve undergraduate and graduate students
- Areas of theoretical and methodological expertise that complement existing faculty strengths
- Ability to develop innovative undergraduate and graduate-level courses that expand current cultural offerings
- Record of research-related publication and/or funding in the field specified in the
- Teaching experience as instructor-of-record at the college level, in cultural anthropology or related field
- Evidence of commitment to building an inclusive scholarly milieu in teaching, research and service
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
- Current knowledge in the field of medical anthropology, the body, and/or gender and sexuality
