Description of Department:
We offer four-field professional training to undergraduates in anthropology under the guidance of a professionally active faculty who value excellence in teaching and research in the Department of Anthropology. Our program of instruction has several components and goals:
- We include the academic transmission of key ideas and knowledge of human life in all four anthropology subfields: archaeology, biological/physical anthropology, linguistic anthropology, and sociocultural anthropology.
- We strive for students to develop key skills such as ability to think critically, demonstrate mastery of oral and written presentations, and accomplish professional analyses within the disciplines.
- Our department is committed to supporting diversity and inclusion within all levels of the curriculum design and laboratory practice with student experience at the forefront.
- We provide hands-on experiences in research and professional training, including cultural resource management archaeology, collections management, forensic analysis, and ethnographic projects.
- We promote cross-cultural experience through studying abroad and local internships that enhance academic learning through practical experience and training.
- We offer archaeology field schools and training in historic preservation and conservation.
- We offer extensive teaching labs and research lab support for undergraduate research and training in biological anthropology and archaeology.
- We maintain the integrity of the anthropology program while supporting the larger mission and programs of the college, especially related to Global Studies, Area Studies, and Great Lakes (environment), and Sustainability. Description of Responsibilities:
The Assistant Professor of Anthropology will be required to teach courses in Historical Archaeology, Introductory Archaeology, and upper division courses in an analytical specialty and courses in Afro-Latino/Latin American Studies based on subject expertise, and other upper-division Anthropology courses as needed. This hire will be housed in the Department of Anthropology and create curriculum in support of developing Afro-Latino and/or Latin American Studies within our department's offerings. Responsibilities also include student advisement duties and co-management of the archaeology lab space and collection with existing archaeology faculty.
The Assistant Professor of Anthropology will be expected to display a demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching and scholarship, commitment to undergraduate and/or graduate education, and possess communication and interpersonal skills sufficient to work effectively with an increasingly diverse array of students and colleagues.

- Ph.D. in anthropology or closely related field, ABD candidates who will have PhD by time of appointment will be considered.

- Engaged in an active program of research with the potential to involve and train students.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Ph.D. with specialty in historical archaeology, whose research focuses on Afro-Latino communities and heritage. Scholar-educators who have experience directing archaeology fieldwork projects and can contribute to interdisciplinary programs such as Sustainability Studies, Native American Studies, regional area studies, and public archaeology and historic preservation are especially attractive.
