The Department of Anthropology at Dartmouth College invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, with initial appointment as a postdoctoral fellow. We seek a cultural anthropologist whose scholarship focuses on the study of inequality, such as social problems that emerge from or are reinforced by forms of structural violence and marginalization, and whose work as a scholar-teacher contributes to more equitable futures. We are especially interested in applicants whose research involves the use of visual or multi-modal methods and forms of knowledge production. We welcome applications from individuals whose work contributes to ethnographic theory and practice.
This position is part of the Faculty Fellow Program in Arts Sciences, a cohort of faculty members who have demonstrated their commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in their disciplines. Successfully qualified candidates will have an outstanding record of research, teaching, mentoring, and service. Faculty Fellows are initially appointed to a two-year residential postdoctoral position. At the end of this appointment, the position is directly converted to a regular tenure-track appointment as Assistant Professor. In addition, the Anthropology Department has a second search in the Archeology of Indigenous America that is part of a cohort hiring initiative in Native American and Indigenous Studies across the Arts and Sciences.
Anthropology at Dartmouth is a vibrant intellectual community spanning the four subfields, with one of the strongest records in our discipline among US liberal arts colleges. The person in this position will contribute to the department's core curriculum and will have opportunities to develop new courses reflecting their areas of specialization. We seek qualified candidates who will be engaging and inspiring to our students and who will enhance the diversity of courses and other educational experiences in the department. In support of research, faculty and students in the department have access to travel and research funding from numerous institutional sources, including the department's Claire Garber Goodman Fund for Anthropological Research.
Faculty in Anthropology collaborate with many other areas at Dartmouth. The department is part of a growing interdisciplinary PhD program, Ecology, Evolution, Environment and Society (EEES), through which we maintain a cohort of graduate students in relevant fields of anthropology, including cultural anthropology. In addition, the department typically hosts several postdoctoral scholars funded by the Dartmouth Society of Fellows, the Neukom Institute, the McKennan Fund, and a variety of other institutional programs. Our graduate students and postdoctoral scholars are supported by the Guarini School for Graduate and Advanced Studies, including their diversity and inclusion initiatives. Although this position will be housed entirely within Anthropology, the person hired may pursue faculty affiliations with other relevant departments and programs, such as: Geography, Environmental Studies; Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies; Native American and Indigenous Studies; Middle East Studies; Latin American, Latino, and Caribbean Studies; African and African American Studies; and Asian Societies, Cultures, and Languages.
