The Department of Anthropology at Dartmouth College invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track appointment at the rank of an Assistant Professor specializing in the archaeology of Indigenous America. We seek applicants with a demonstrated record of field and lab-based archaeological research, a commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching, and demonstrated engagement with contemporary Indigenous and descendant communities. Regional focus within the Americas and technical specialization are open. We seek candidates who will be engaging and inspiring our students and who will enhance the diversity of courses and other educational experiences in the department. This position will have a tenure home in the Department of Anthropology, with a secondary appointment in the Department of Native American and Indigenous Studies. This search is part of a cohort hiring initiative in Native American and Indigenous Studies across the Arts and Sciences at Dartmouth. The other positions are in Global Indigenous Studies and Indigenous Environmental Studies. Collectively, these hires reflect Dartmouth's commitment to building and sustaining innovative Indigenous scholarship and teaching. In addition, the Anthropology Department has a second search in Cultural Anthropology focused on the study of inequality that is part of the Faculty Fellow Program in Arts Sciences, a cohort of faculty members who have demonstrated their commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in their disciplines. Anthropology at Dartmouth is a vibrant intellectual community spanning the four subfields, with one of the strongest records in our discipline among US liberal arts colleges. The person in this position will contribute to the department's core curriculum and will have opportunities to develop new courses reflecting their areas of specialization. We seek qualified candidates who will be engaging and inspiring to our students and who will enhance the diversity of courses and other educational experiences in the department. In support of research, faculty and students in the department have access to travel and research funding from numerous institutional sources, including the department's Claire Garber Goodman Fund for Anthropological Research. Faculty in Anthropology collaborate with many other areas at Dartmouth. The department is part of a growing interdisciplinary PhD program, Ecology, Evolution, Environment and Society (EEES), through which we maintain a cohort of graduate students in relevant fields of anthropology, including archaeology. In addition, the department typically hosts several postdoctoral scholars funded by the Dartmouth Society of Fellows, the Neukom Institute, the McKennan Fund, and a variety of other institutional programs. Our graduate students and postdoctoral scholars are supported by the Guarini School for Graduate and Advanced Studies, including their diversity and inclusion initiatives. Faculty in the department frequently collaborate with colleagues in the Geisel School of Medicine and the Thayer School of Engineering, and many have additional affiliations with related departments and programs, such as: Geography, Biological Sciences, Classics, Environmental Studies; Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies; Latin American, Latino, and Caribbean Studies; and African and African American Studies. Qualifications:
Applicants should have a PhD in anthropology, archaeology, or closely related field, or be ABD with PhD expected before the start date of their appointment. Applicants will be selected on the basis of their academic achievement, promise in research and teaching, and demonstrated commitment to addressing underrepresentation in higher education. Effective classroom teaching is essential for this position.
