The Department of Anthropology at the University of Massachusetts Boston invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in Indigenous cultural anthropology beginning September 1, 2024. Strong preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated relationships and active research in Native North American Indigenous communities (Mexico, United States, Canada).

We seek an accomplished researcher and an experienced instructor who is committed to teaching in an urban university setting and to thinking and practicing in collaborative and interdisciplinary ways. A major focus would be the growth of the department's thriving undergraduate program in Anthropology and the minor in Native American and Indigenous Studies (jointly housed in the Department of History).

Areas of potential research interest include, but are not limited to: Indigenous research methodologies and community-engaged research; Indigenous futurisms; language revitalization; material culture, heritage, and sovereignty issues in relationships between institutions and communities; Indigenous community reclamation of knowledge, land, and water; health disparities and food sovereignty; social movements, anti-racism, and gender justice; education and youth issues; and environmental justice, traditional ecological knowledge, and urgent climate issues.

Beyond the position’s core responsibilities, the successful candidate may find rich opportunities for research, teaching, and community work in collaboration with the Department’s Historical Archaeology Master’s program, the Critical Ethnic and Community Studies Master’s program, and the Institute for New England Native American Studies, among others.

The Department would be particularly receptive to candidates who can involve undergraduate and graduate students in research. UMass Boston expects all faculty members to pursue external funding that supports long-term research agendas and to publish regularly. Equally important is a candidate who has a demonstrated commitment to building an equitable and inclusive scholarly and collegial environment, which the Department will match with sustained and supportive tenure-track faculty mentoring. Minimum requirements:

receipt of Ph.D. in Anthropology by no later than August 31, 2024.
