Overview

This is a newly created, 1-year, term position to support Princeton University's implementation of the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) and the Human Remains Oversight Board (HROB).

The person in this role will conduct a comprehensive and meticulous evaluation of any human remains or collections at Princeton University in order to determine their identity, age and origins. This research will inform the University's decision about what to do with the remains going forward (e.g., retain and care for them, or attempt to repatriate or transfer them to the appropriate individuals or communities). The research associate will assist in the identification and appropriate treatment of non-NAGRPA related remains and assist in ongoing NAGPRA-related assessment.

Responsibilities

Subject Matter Expert:
  • Provide detailed assessment and care of a small set of skeletal remains to identify and verify the elements in the collection- Maintain detailed records of all findings and share those findings with the HROB, NAGPRA committee, faculty, researchers, students, consultants, outside experts, and regulators as requested

Program Coordination:
  • Serve as a liaison between HROB and Princeton University's NAGPRA committee regarding overlapping cases- Work with Princeton University, the NAGPA committee, and the HROB to ensure proper and respectful care, treatment, use, and appropriate housing of the remains

Qualifications

Essential Requirements:
  • MA or PhD in Biological Anthropology, Bioarcheology, or related area- Training in forensic and/or bioarcheological analyses of human skeletal remains- Ability to maintain thorough, accurate, and complete records- Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills (both written and verbal).- Detail-oriented and self-motivated problem-solving skills

Preferred Knowledge & Skills:
  • Previous museum or forensic work with skeletal collections- Training and experience with NAGPRA and the respectful and careful analyses of human remains
