The International Museum of the Horse is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Parks Museum Curator Assistant.
The International Museum of the Horse is a Smithsonian Affiliate Museum, which focuses on the relationship between humans and horses throughout world history. We are looking for dynamic individuals with experience in collections management, object handling, photography, and database entry.
This is a federal funded time-limited (FFTL) position. This means it is a position that is paid entirely as the result of a grant. The duration of employment shall not exceed the life of the grant that funds the position. An employee appointed to a FFTL position is required to meet the minimum requirements for the classification. Further, an employee appointed to a FFTL position is designated as an unclassified (non-merit) employee. A FFTL employee is eligible to receive benefits at the same level as a classified (merit) employee in a permanent position.

Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION: Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in museology or museum sciences, library science, history, archeology, anthropology or a related field.
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Six months of experience in library science, curatorship, conservatorship, management of a museum, or in the identification, cataloging, or research of artifacts.
Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: Graduate study in library science, museology or museum sciences, or a related field will substitute for the required experience on a month-for-month basis.
Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: Additional experience in one of the above fields will substitute for the required education on a year-for- year basis.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): NONE
Working Conditions
Incumbents in this job title works indoors in climate-controlled museum/library. Occasionally works outdoors on ladder or scaffold. Possible exposure to substances often found on artifacts/library materials, such as mildew, which may require the utilization of safety procedures/protocols.

Primary Responsibilities
- Assists in the documentation, organization, and management of the artifact collections and library materials
- Performs hands-on maintenance of preserving, handling, photographing, and cataloguing museum objects, including art, horse tack, models, textiles, trophies, and other objects
- Assist in the cleaning of Museum objects
- Assist with updating the collections database Past Perfect and researching equine history, industry, sports, arts, and objects
- Assist with building object mounts and housing units
- Performs related duties as required
Qualifications
- Demonstrated knowledge of object/artifact handling and care standards
- Knowledge of museum best practices and procedures
- Necessary skills to work collaboratively on a small staff
- Ability to use computers, cameras, basic cleaning tools, and basic hand tools
