Our Cultural Resources Unit is recruiting for an archeologist to monitor, evaluate and document the impacts of transportation projects and other department activities on archaeological resources. Your work documenting our compliance with laws and regulations will support the preparation of permit applications and legal findings. A day in the life:
- Assist with monitoring construction excavation for potential impacts to archaeological resources.
- Coordinate schedules for archaeological surveys, testing and data recovery with the Oregon Museum of Anthropology (OSMA) and other contractors.
- Assist with maintaining records for archaeological work and prepare estimates.
- Evaluate archaeological testing and data recovery proposals for compliance with applicable laws.
- Assist with research to assess the effects of transportation projects on archaeological resources, traditional cultural properties and other cultural resources.
- Draft technical reports, memos, determinations of eligibility and other cultural resources compliance documentation.
- Communicate with other ODOT personnel, consultants and various state and federal agencies whose expertise or jurisdiction is related to cultural resource management and regulating functions.
- Work in both office and field environments - hybrid work options available.
- Statewide travel including overnight stays required.
- Travel and field work can involve exposure to traffic hazards, rough terrain and all weather conditions.

What we need:
Three years of technical office, lab, or field work experience developing environmental programs.
A bachelor's degree in an environmental science, a physical science, a natural science, engineering, or a closely-related field.
Driving is an essential function of this position. You must have a valid driver license and an acceptable driving record. We will conduct pre-employment driving records checks on our final candidate(s). Your license does not have to be issued in Oregon to be considered.

- Bachelor's degree in archaeology, anthropology or a closely related field, and at least one year of experience with archaeological field work in reconnaissance, testing or data recovery.
- Knowledge of Oregon and federal cultural resources laws and regulations and experience conducting regulatory compliance activities for Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act - experience with transportation projects is preferred.
- Experience conducting archaeological research and field work to determine and document effects of projects or programs on cultural resources.
- Experience developing and managing contracts for cultural resources work.
- Strong organizational and technical writing skills.
