Raba Kistner, Inc. is seeking an experienced Project Archaeologist/Geoarcheologist, to join our Environmental team either our San Antonio, TX or Houston, TX location. Responsibilities will include assisting the RKI Cultural Resources Compliance (CRC) team with, managing, overseeing and/or executing a wide variety of cultural resource projects and geoarchaeological assessments of archaeological sites and deposits to aid the archaeological staff in designing and investigating buried cultural deposits The Project Archaeologist shall be assigned project management and field execution responsibilities ranging from designing, supervising and conducting field work, including but not limited to pedestrian surveys, National Register of Historic Places eligibility testing, and data recovery investigations. The Project Archaeologist will also support the laboratory processing and curation preparation activities associated with projects and will be involved in the analysis of artifacts and the preparation of technical reports associated with each project. This position will support the firms objectives of meeting our clients expectations in a timely manner and lead by example to set high standards for creativity and inter-office and intra-office cooperation.
  • Oversee sub-consultants including Archaeologists, Architectural Historians, Historians, and other Specialists on multiple and complex multi-disciplinary teams and projects.
  • Prepare archaeology permit applications to the appropriate oversight agencies.
  • Prepare technical reports from project data and field observation notes.
  • Assist in preparation of archaeology proposals and qualifications statements.
  • Serves as Project Archaeologist/ Geoarchaeologist on cultural resource projects.
  • Work with existing Engineering and Environmental Clients to ensure proper responses to existing contractual obligations.
  • Participate in regional organization(s) to build the business reach of the RKI Archaeology Office in San Antonio and Houston surrounding region.
  • Conducts analyses of field data and artifacts recovered.
  • Assists in developing and utilizing GIS data for project-specific assignments.
  • Assists senior management to monitor technical and loss prevention practices to ensure the CRC Service Line is in substantial compliance with good accepted practices.
  • Plan and effectively utilize managerial skills to advance the Companys profitability and the effectiveness of all archaeology staff.
  • Coordinate with the Assistant Directors and Director to ensure outstanding performance of cultural resources tasks, with workload and financial forecasting and planning, and geoarchaeological investigations associated with existing contract obligations.
  • Conducts and prepares Scopes of Work (SOW) and Research Designs for Geoarchaeological investigations and completes the necessary technical reporting.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.



A Masters degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or Historic Preservation, or a closely related field and minimum of 5 years applicable experience (higher education may apply as applicable experience). Formal training as a geoarchaeologist and with a minimum of 2 years applicable experience (higher education may apply as applicable experience).Strong knowledge of and practical experience with Antiquities Code of Texas permitting process and requirements. Strong knowledge of and practical experience in artifact processing, curation preparation, and with archaeological field methods and techniques. Experience in interpreting and applying Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act and the rules and regulations associated with the National Environmental Protection Agency. Ability to work independently.

Ability to read and understand instructions, labels, reports, etc. Ability to effectively communicate information both written and oral and respond to questions in person-to-person and small group situations with customers, clients, general public and other employees of the organization.

Work environment may requires potential exposure to movement of heavy equipment on construction or roadway sites; potential exposure to varying weather conditions, hazardous dangerous chemicals and solvents, noise, dust, fumes, grease and oils, radiant and electrical energy, and vibration; all of which would require employee to follow proper safety procedures and utilize appropriate protective equipment.

This position may require protracted or irregular hours. Flexibility to work irregular hours is necessary due to client needs.
