The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County was the first museum in L.A. to open its doors 109 years ago and is poised for an exciting new era as it plans for the future. Having recently completed a new strategic framework, the Natural History Museums of Los Angeles County-including NHMLA at Exposition Park, La Brea Tar Pits and museum in mid-Wilshire, and the William S. Hart Museum in Newhall-is looking forward to new building projects and campaigns, exhibitions, community outreach, and innovative audience engagement.

The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County is seeking a Manager, Mobile Museums for our Education & Programs department. The Manager, Mobile Museums works closely with the Senior Manager, Education Outreach to implement the Mobile Museum's school and community programmatic vision for the Natural History Museum and the La Brea Tar Pits & Museum. It is an exciting time as we embark on new journeys of becoming a museum of, for, and with L.A.

Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:
  • Manages, develops, and implements the Mobile Museum (MM) Program's content, staff and operations, including: budget, program design, vehicle and exhibition maintenance, school and community participation, and staff supervision of the Supervisor, Education Specialist, Administrative Assistant, and Class A Drivers. Work is highly independent and requires strong decision-making skills.
  • Develops and manages the growth of the MM Program, in partnership with Senior Manager, Education Outreach, including programs, participant resources, and workshops in alignment with the Museum's IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access) initiatives.
  • Oversees hiring, training, professional development, and supervision of 5 full-time staff and 2 part-time staff.
  • Designs or identifies additional resources for MM program projects, curriculum development and revisions, as well as Educator training and professional development. Ensures programs incorporate current education theory, educational technologies, state and national curriculum guidelines.
  • Establishes measurable outcome goals for MM programs in collaboration with the Education Department leadership and Evaluation Department staff, to ensure internal and funder goals are met.
  • Oversees that programmatic participation and impact metrics are accurately gathered. Assists fundraising efforts through strategic data collection and impact reporting.
  • Oversees and manages the integration and operation of the Program's evaluation systems, website, marketing to new and existing audiences, ticketing system and booking, data reports, and customer relationship management system.
  • Ensures MM vehicle fleet is compliant and meets local and state regulations. Works closely with MM Class A truck drivers to update vehicle documentation and maintenance as needed. Oversight of Class A driver occupational requirements including: medical certificates, drug and alcohol testing, Employer Pull Notice Program.
  • Participates in Department, Division, and Museum meetings as appropriate. Provides input as needed. Participates as appropriate on inter-departmental museum teams and workgroups.
  • Establishes and maintains communication with schools and community partners and receives input from such groups on teacher,school, and community needs related to these same programs. Serves as a liaison for education funders and school districts.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Senior Manager, Education & Outreach dependent on organizational needs. Occasional weekend hours will be required.

This position has the following requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Biological Science, History, Anthropology or related field required. Master's degree or equivalent preferred, but not required.
  • Project management experience with education programs. Prior museum, community or comparable experience at successively higher levels of responsibility preferred. Knowledge of current museum and informal educational practices in informal science institutions. Demonstrated success delivering school focused programs highly desirable.
  • Experience in staff hiring, supervision and coaching. Successful team-builder able to produce positive change; track record of providing leadership and effective management of staff.
