The Department of Sociology and Anthropology at West Virginia University invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Sociology with a specialization in critical criminology starting August 11, 2023. This is a nine-month, full-time, tenure-track position with full benefits. The successful candidate will complement and extend current faculty research and teaching expertise in criminology, inequality, social psychology, the sociology of religion, and cultural and archaeological anthropology. The department seeks an outstanding scholar whose research and/or teaching engages with (or has the potential to engage with) issues related to equity, social inequality and/or social justice.

The WVU Department of Sociology and Anthropology offers B.A. programs in sociology, criminology, and anthropology and has over 600 majors. The Department also offers a PhD in sociology. The Department of Sociology and Anthropology is home to many scholars who contribute broadly to the area of social justice in research, teaching, public engagement, and activism. The Department also houses the Research Center on Violence, the Survey Research Center, the Religion and Society Research Group, the West Virginia Environment and Society Lab, and the Archaeology Lab.

WVU is an R1 research land grant university located within 90 minutes of Pittsburgh and 3.5 hours from the Washington/Baltimore metropolitan area. The successful candidate must have 1) a Ph.D. in Sociology, or a related field by August 2023; 2) demonstrated research and/or teaching interest in critical criminology; 3) demonstrated ability or potential to produce high-quality scholarship for publication; 4) demonstrated ability or potential to develop a robust and externally funded research program; 5) strong potential for outstanding contribution to the department's undergraduate and graduate teaching and research missions; 6) strong methodological skills (qualitative and/or quantitative); 7) research and/or teaching that engages (has the potential to engage) issues related to equity, social inequality, and/or social justice. The teaching load is two courses or course equivalents per semester.
