JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
The Department of Anthropology (https://anth.la.psu.edu/) in the College of the Liberal Arts (https://la.psu.edu) is seeking a Research Technologist 1. This position is responsible for assisting in the performance of a wide variety of specialized tasks in Professor Joan Richtsmeier's Image Analysis and Morphometrics Lab.
The key responsibilities for this position include:
- Assisting with regular observation and maintenance of our mouse colony at the Millennium Science Complex
- Handling of mice for embryological analysis (mouse handling includes setting up timed mating, tail clipping, ear tagging, and collecting embryos)
- Assisting with histological and experimental sample preparation in the Department of Anthropology
- Photographing histological images for analysis
- Assisting in laboratory experiments to prepare mouse samples for genotyping, other biochemical assays, and imaging
- Assisting in record keeping for data management of mouse breeding, mouse genotyping, and associated histology and staining
Additional Information: This is a limited-term appointment, funded for one year from date of hire.
Education and Experience: This position typically requires a Bachelor's degree plus a year of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A degree in Anthropology, Biology, Genetics, or related field is preferred. Applicants should have a minimum of 6 months of experience in a wet lab setting, be familiar with chemistry lab safety and waste disposal procedures, and have some practical lab skills. The preferred candidate must have previous experience of animal husbandry or a willingness to learn embryology of mammals. The individual should also have some experience dealing with different formats of image files and database systems. Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel are necessary. Applicants also need the ability to problem solve based on their conceptual knowledge of chemistry, biology, and/or genetics.
