The Department of Folk Studies and Anthropology at Western Kentucky University (WKU) seeks qualified applicants for a Visiting Assistant Professor in Applied Cultural Anthropology. This is a nine-month position for the 2023-2024 academic year. This position is currently being filled as a temporary position with an end date, however it has the potential to become a regular, ongoing appointment that will entail a new, competitive search; the successful candidate for the visiting position may apply. The topical and geographical areas of applied expertise are open, but preference is for candidates in visual/media anthropology and/or another area with potential for campus or community collaboration such as immigrant/migration studies, environmental anthropology, or medical anthropology.
The Department of Folk Studies and Anthropology offers a four-field undergraduate program in anthropology with about 70 majors and minors, as well as a minor in folklore. The department also houses the Anthropology Lab, Ethnographic Visual Production Lab, Kentucky Archaeological Survey, and Kentucky Folklife Program.
Undergraduate degrees at the university include film; film studies; photojournalism; environmental, sustainability, and geographic studies; public health; healthcare administration; and nursing. Bowling Green is one of the largest areas for refugee resettlement in the nation for a town of its size. It is home to the International Center of Kentucky, GEO International High School, International Festival, and University of Kentucky College of Medicine.
