Position Highlights
The Assistant Curator of Archaeology is a continuing-eligible Academic Professional faculty position functioning in the Collections Division of the Arizona State Museum (ASM) at the University of Arizona (UA). The incumbent provides curatorial oversight for the cataloged archaeological collections housed at the Arizona State Museum and serves as a liaison with other museums, universities, public agencies, and private institutions regarding these collections. The incumbent also consults with others in the Collections Division and members of other ASM divisions regarding the display and interpretation of archaeological objects. In addition, the incumbent coordinates and oversees the location, identification, and documentation of funerary objects for the purpose of repatriation, pursuant to NAGPRA (the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act), in cooperation with the Repatriation Coordinator. The incumbent maintains a research program and prepares publications (and may prepare or contribute to exhibits) focused, at least in part, on ASM's collections. Other duties include service on ASM and UA committees, participation in professional museum and archaeological organizations, pursuing grants and other forms of external funding to support research and collections management, and may include supervision of staff, students, and/or volunteers.

Duties & Responsibilities
A.Academic Professional Activities (50%-60%)

1.General Collections Management

a.Oversees the physical care of cataloged archaeological collections, including monitoring storage and security conditions, supervising the handling of collections, instructing staff, students and other users in proper handling procedures, and coordinating with the Head of Collections and the Preservation Division to evaluate conservation needs and priorities.

b.Identifies, describes, inventories, and catalogs newly acquired archaeological specimens. May create other forms of documentation associated with new acquisitions.

c.Evaluates and improves the quality of existing catalog information and other

documentation associated with cataloged archaeological collections.

d.Maintains complete and accurate records of the locations of all cataloged archaeological specimens.

e.Serves as liaison to donors, lenders, researchers, ASM staff and faculty, and other museums, universities, agencies, and institutions regarding access to the cataloged archaeological collections.

f.In coordination with the Head of Collections, develops and maintains policy and

procedural guidelines for the curation of cataloged archaeological collections.

g.Collaborates and coordinates with the Head of Collections and other ASM staff and faculty to ensure that ASM complies with state and federal statutes related to collections management, including NAGPRA, as well as pertinent international

conventions.

h.In coordination with the ASM Registrar, assures that proper accession and loan

procedures are followed regarding cataloged archaeological collections.

i.Coordinates with the Head of Collections and other ASM staff and faculty on use of sensitive archaeological materials or unusual requests.
