Position Summary:The University of Alaska Fairbanks Department of Anthropology invites applications for a non-tenure track Assistant Professor of Anthropology.
Duties:
25% Research - data collection and analysis, preparing research results for publication, preparing grant applications, conference presentations Essential
5% Service - departmental service advising students and other duties as needed, possible university committee service, external professional service (e.g., serving as an academic editor, reviewing papers and grants, serving on grant panels), and community outreach. Essential
70% Teaching - Teaching duties specifically include established lower, upper, and stacked courses (e.g., Introduction to Anthropology, Bioarchaeology, Archaeology of Hunter Gatherers and other courses in archaeology and bioanthropology. Advise, mentor, and support students. Hold office hours appropriate for the courses being taught. Develop and modify curriculum for face to face, distance delivery and other teaching modalities. This position has funding for a maximum of four years. Applicants must have training in archaeology and/or biological anthropology, with a research focus that complements but does not duplicate faculty expertise. Examples of desirable research foci include (but are not limited to) forensic anthropology, stable isotope analysis, bioarchaeology, archaeogenetics and community archaeology. Expertise in, or willingness to expand research foci to circumpolar regions is preferred, but not required.
Candidates shall demonstrate excellence in teaching. The teaching load and duties specifically will include a lower division, four-field, introduction to anthropology course (ANTH F101X), bioarchaeology (ANTH F426), and an advanced undergraduate/graduate course on the archaeology of hunter gatherers (ANTH F492/692) and other upper or lower division courses in the candidate's area of specialization. The successful candidate is expected to prepare curriculum for in-person, online, asynchronous or distance delivery and other teaching modalities as needed. Faculty in the Department of Anthropology has a strong record of obtaining internal funding to support undergraduate research, the ideal candidate will create opportunities to engage students in their research program.
Other responsibilities may include service to the department (e.g., advising undergraduate anthropology majors, faculty liaison for the anthropology club or organizing the colloquium series), serving on university faculty governance committees and/or community service and outreach.
PhD in Anthropology or related field at time of appointment required.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:Ability to teach a variety of archaeology and bioanthropology classes at both the undergraduate and graduate level. Ability to teach both face to face and online courses using distance education technology. Skill in online teaching and verbal communication. Knowledge of general and specific subject areas in archaeology and/or biological anthropology.
Typical Experience:
Experience teaching at the university level, conducting independent research projects, providing professional service to university or public communities.
Required Education or Training:
PhD in Anthropology with a specialization in Archaeology or Biological Anthropology at time of appointment required. Experience teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses. Expertise and experience in archaeology or bioanthropology research.
