The Avenir Conservation Center of the Denver Museum of Nature and Science is actively expanding staffing and resources. The textile conservator will have a unique opportunity to collaborate with conservation and curatorial colleagues to envision and guide development of textile conservation capacity and projects. The conservator will carry out the technical analysis and conservation of the museum's textile and related collections, and will support the development and operations of the Avenir Conservation Center. Particular strengths of the anthropology collections include Native North American textiles, archaeological textiles from South America, and basketry.

Work Schedule: Onsite, 40 hours/week.

Supervises: 0 This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Essential duties:
  • Completes documentation, condition examinations, proposals for treatment, or conservation stabilization treatments. as may be required in response to routine operations, emergency situations, exhibitions, grant awards, or loans. Ensures that all appropriate documentation is complete and preserved.
  • Engages with communities of origin in collaborative decision-making around textile and related collections
  • Provides collaborative support to the Integrative Collections Branch toward implementation of a preventive care approach to collections preservation through the identification of agents of deterioration and mitigation of risks PAN-museum.
  • Oversees the use and maintenance of the equipment and supplies in the Center, and supports SDS compliance for the Center.
  • Researches and reviews conservation methods and materials for use in the Center.
  • Participates in recruitment, training, and supervision of interns, volunteers, and students.

Minimum qualifications/Requirements:
  • Master's Degree in Conservation
  • Minimum 2 years work as a practicing conservator, preferably within a museum.

Additional skills desired:
  • Demonstrated experience and advanced knowledge of sewing techniques, garment construction, weaving structure, dyes and colorants, textile mounting techniques.
  • Demonstrated experience in the treatment and preservation of woven textiles and basketry, garments, beadwork, and related objects of material culture.
  • Demonstrated skills in digital imaging for documentation and analysis
  • Experience and commitment to working within a collaborative community.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.

Ideal candidate will have/be:
  • Bilingual English/Spanish
  • Interest in innovations in conservation science and imaging, and the desire to carry out technical research toward publication or public presentation
  • Familiarity with microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, and other analytic technologies
  • Engaged commitment to working collaboratively with conservation and curatorial colleagues, scholars and related community members
  • Experience with conservation projects that engage originating communities in decision making.
  • Knowledgeable of ethical issues of ethnographic and related collections.
  • Comfortable speaking to the public

Preference will be given to candidates with:
  • Demonstrated experience and advanced knowledge of sewing techniques, garment construction, weaving structure, dyes and colorants, textile mounting techniques.
  • Demonstrated experience in the treatment and preservation of woven textiles and basketry, garments, beadwork, and related objects of material culture.
  • Strong interest in research, cross disciplinary collaboration, and publication.
