Description The Department of Anthropology at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville seeks a full-time tenure-track cultural anthropologist, at the level of Associate Professor, to begin August 1, 2023. The successful candidate will have an active research and teaching agenda whose work is committed to theoretical and methodological rigor in cultural, social or socio-cultural anthropology and focused on the theme of displacement, broadly defined. Desired areas of specialization include, but are not limited to, material dispossession, structural violence and inequality, war, migration (including that caused by environmental injustice), genocide, and climate catastrophe.
Qualifications We require that the Ph.D. be in hand at the time of appointment. The successful candidate’s research and teaching will contribute to frameworks such as critical race theory, decolonization, feminist theory, queer theory, political economy and other related bodies of thought, complementing current departmental strengths. The department is especially interested in candidates whose work brings together a concern with power and violence on the one hand, with a focus on resistance and change on the other. Geographical focus is open and we especially welcome applications from candidates working in under-represented areas or scholars whose research is situated in the American South, or in Appalachia. The successful candidate will be expected to teach courses that engage cultural anthropological approaches to power, including inquiries into race, colonization, labor, gender and sexuality, as well as courses that explicitly center the problem of displacement.
The candidate will have a 2/2 teaching load, which will also include mentoring and advising graduate and undergraduate students, along with expectations for active research, and departmental, college, university and professional service. The Knoxville campus of the University of Tennessee is seeking candidates who have the ability to contribute in meaningful ways to the diversity and intercultural goals of the University.
