The Doris Z. Stone Post-Doctoral Fellowship, appointed in the Stone Center for Latin American Studies and housed at the Middle American Research Institute (MARI), aims to foster the professional development of gifted scholars, enrich MARI’s vigorous research environment, and cultivate intellectual exchange within the Institute's research community. We seek to support the development of early-career scholars from diverse backgrounds—especially scholars from historically or geographically under-represented or indigenous groups—conducting innovative anthropological research in Mesoamerica or Central America, areas where Doris Z. Stone made significant scholarly contributions.

We seek candidates with research interests that broadly complement the Middle American Research Institute’s efforts 1) researching the indigenous history, languages, and cultures of Mesoamerica and Central America, 2) stewarding its archaeological and ethnological collections, and 3) developing programs and events to educate the public on Mesoamerica and Central America. Fellows are expected to participate in the full intellectual life of the university, offer an advanced interdisciplinary seminar on a subject of their choice during one semester of each fellowship year, present on their research once every two semesters of the appointment, as well as counsel undergraduate, Masters, and doctoral students as needed.

The Middle American Research Institute and the Stone Center for Latin American Studies invite applications for a one-year (renewable for a second year) post-doctoral fellowship for the 2023-2024 academic year. Fellows will be selected following two criteria: (1) intellectual merit and (2) the potential impact that their research, teaching, and experience would have on the strategic advancement of the Middle American Research Institute at Tulane. The ideal candidate’s research will complement areas of strength represented by current Tulane faculty associated with the Institute.  Successful candidates should also have strong organizational and interpersonal abilities, excellent written and oral communication skills, a demonstrated capacity to work collaboratively, and experience in managing multiple projects.

Fellowships are one-year, residential, full-time appointments with a salary of $48,940 plus benefits, renewable for a second year based on performance and funding availability. Travel and moving expenses are not supported. Applicants must either 1) have received their PhD no later than May 2018 and not currently hold a tenure-track position, or 2) complete their Ph.D. by May 2023. Preference will be given to those who have not had recent access to Tulane University’s resources and whose research would benefit from such access.

Applications must be submitted via Interfolio and must include (1) a curriculum vitae; (2) a cover letter describing research interests, teaching and administrative experience, and your particular capacity to contribute to the Center’s interdisciplinary mission; (3) a graduate transcript; (4) two recommendation letters; (5) a writing sample; (6) a detailed proposal for teaching at least one content course or seminar; and (7) teaching evaluations if available.
