The Department of Anthropology at SUNY Geneseo (located 40 minutes from downtown Rochester, NY) invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of assistant professor. We seek a scholar with research expertise in health, disease, illness, or medicine. Regional focus is open.

In addition to teaching courses that contribute to the department’s major/minor in anthropology and interdisciplinary major/minor in sociomedical sciences, the ideal candidate’s expertise will contribute to one of the following interdisciplinary programs at the college: Native American Studies, Sustainability Studies, Women’s and Gender Studies, Latin American and Caribbean Studies, Black Studies, American Studies, Linguistics, Asian Studies.

We seek to hire a scholar with an active research agenda who is also committed to undergraduate education and mentorship. In addition to producing scholarship, this position requires a 3 x 3 teaching load, student advising, and service to the department and the college. Required Qualifications

  • Applicants must have earned a doctorate, or international equivalent, in anthropology or a related field by the date of appointment (September 1, 2023).   Research in medical anthropology (with a cultural or biocultural orientation) or a related field. Active research agenda in the Americas (North America, Latin America or the Caribbean). Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A record of teaching excellence, especially in undergraduate courses in medical anthropology or related subjects. Experience working with students on undergraduate research or other integrative and applied learning experiences.
