The Department of Anthropology at Appalachian State University invites applications for a 9-
month, tenure-track faculty position in sociocultural anthropology at the rank of Assistant
Professor beginning 08/01/2023. A Ph.D. in Anthropology or Linguistic Anthropology is
required. Candidates who are ABD will be considered, but the position requires completion of
all doctoral requirements in anthropology by the date of appointment.
We seek a sociocultural anthropologist with a specialty in linguistics whose work engages
critical contemporary issues. We are interested in candidates whose interests and areas of

collective commitment to transformative justice, inclusion, and equality.
The successful candidate will be a dynamic teacher-scholar committed to training
undergraduate students. Instructional duties will include a 3:3 course load including
introductory courses in sociocultural anthropology and upper level method and theory courses
in the candidate’s areas of expertise. Faculty members are expected to maintain an active
program of scholarship and to participate in service activities including undergraduate advising.
