FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

The Colin Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership at The City College of New York is searching for an accomplished scholar to become the inaugural endowed Sternberg Family Professor of Leadership. We seek interdisciplinary candidates with expertise and experience focused on civic leadership, global leadership, leadership for social change, or leadership in a democratic society. The Sternberg Family Professor will play a central role in the launch of a new interdisciplinary undergraduate leadership studies program at the Colin Powell School, and we encourage applications from scholars who are particularly attracted to undergraduate teaching and mentoring.

The Colin Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership is organized on the premise that the future requires globally-minded, diverse leaders who are able to engage in analytically rigorous and evidence-informed debates. We prepare our students with deep training in the social sciences to lead across industries and in every sector with bold re-imaginings of ways to address the injustices and inequities in our world. Producing these leaders is the fundamental mission of the Colin Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership at The City College of New York. The Sternberg Family Professor will play a key role in fulfilling this mission.

The Colin Powell School is the largest student division of CCNY, with nearly 4,000 students, and we are organized to produce a deep and rigorous education in the social sciences in service to social mobility for a student body that is 80 percent people of color, half immigrants and first in their families to go to college, and mostly from lower income neighborhoods. Our students come from communities that have historically been denied power. They arrive with both a determination to change that and valuable perspectives on the challenges and needs of their communities. As a school, we aspire to prepare them to take power and to become leaders in service to the city and society.

We seek candidates for the Sternberg Family Professorship who are committed to this mission and who have an enthusiasm for being part of the development and launch of a new leadership studies academic program within the Colin Powell School, which will be the first leadership studies program across the entirety of the City University of New York’s twenty-five campuses. We imagine a program that is deeply interdisciplinary and that focuses on the study and the practice of leadership. The program will leverage our distinctive assets as 1) a school of social sciences, 2) a school fundamentally concerned with developing students not just for the workforce but also for civic engagement and as leaders in service to society, and 3) an extraordinarily diverse student body, of mostly immigrants and people of color from historically marginalized communities.

This position carries the rank of Full Professor with a highly competitive salary and a significant annual budget for research and other projects. The person hired will have a tenure home in an academic department within the Colin Powell School most appropriate to their training and work: Anthropology, Gender Studies, International Studies, Economics and Business, Political Science, or Psychology. The Colin Powell School is home to CCNY’s Latin American and Latino Studies program, as well as two CUNY institutes: the CUNY Dominican Studies Institute, and Leadership for Democracy and Social Justice. We welcome candidates for the position who might be drawn to these initiatives.

We invite applications from accomplished scholars who have made contributions to broader public understanding of leadership, and those who have had successful high-level leadership experience in the private, public, or nonprofit sectors. The position includes teaching and program-building opportunities at the B.A. level especially but also at the M.A. and Ph.D. levels, if of interest to the person hired. Our faculty are dedicated to the highest standards of research and to the College’s democratic and public obligations. We take seriously the obligation to produce research in usable forms and to combine that with a focus on student success.
